The New MING 37.09 Uni Dive Watch
MING’s latest release draws attention to the spiny sea creatures best served fresh.
For the independent watchmaking brand MING, the deep-sea adventures began a few years back when the company released its 18.01 Abyss Concept, followed by the 18.01 H41 Titanium models, both with a 1000m water-resistance, both a step away from the dressy lineup MING was known for at the time. Last year, based on the 37 Series architecture, a new MING dive watch was born, the 37.09 Bluefin – an original, robust and capable 600m water-resistant timepiece boasting a distinctive design language yet oceans apart from the 18.01 timepieces presented in 2019-2020. At the start of 2025, the Swiss-Malaysian brand reveals a new take on the 37.09 model that takes inspiration from the “tuna’s more exotic ocean mate,” the spiny sea urchin, or uni in Japanese.
The new MING 37.09 Uni doesn’t introduce any updates to its specifications, as it remains consistent with the 37.09 series. However, the new design draws inspiration from the black colour associated with the venomous animals’ spikes (these creatures also feature purple, green, brown, and yellow variations) and their edible orange innards. The watch is housed in a matte-brushed, black DLC-treated stainless steel case with a stepped bezel and domed sapphire crystals with AR coating on both sides. It measures 38mm in diameter, 12.8mm in thickness, and 44.5mm lug-to-lug.
The Uni has two large crowns designed for ease of use. The screw-down crown at 2 o’clock handles winding and time-setting, while the crown at 4 o’clock – marked with an orange ring on top – operates the internal 60-click rotating sapphire dial with the luminous diving scale featuring the first 20 minutes in orange, combining functionality and a visual statement.
Time is displayed using Super-LumiNova X1 markings printed on the underside of the top crystal. The hands are also coated in Super-LumiNova X1 for excellent visibility. The hour indices are designed to set the 37.09 Uni apart from the 37.09 Bluefin, while the central seconds hand appears to have a half-length lume coating.
The new MING 37.09 Uni is powered by a customized, automatic Sellita SW300-1 (a movement based on the ETA 2892 architecture), visible through the sapphire display caseback. This movement operates at a frequency of 28,800 vibrations/hour, offers a 50-hour autonomy when fully wound, and showcases an anthracite finish on its skeletonized bridges and rotor.
The watch comes with a black, ergonomically shaped FKM rubber strap with curved 20mm bars and a quick-release system for convenience. The strap is secured with a “flying blade” tuck buckle and micro-adjustment for a perfect fit. While not a limited edition, MING plans to produce only 150 Unis this year. The price is CHF 5,250.
