Today we’re starting with a new series of blogs about celebs and the watches they wear. During the recent FIFA World Cup, Frank, Monochrome’s chief, and I chatted for hours about the watches worn by football players and the coaches. Louis van Gaal’s watch proved to be a tough one, but in the end Frank found out he’s wearing a Christiaan van der Klaauw. Now in this series of blogs we’ll focus on other football players, coaches and the likes, and figure out what they are wearing. And no, no sponsored watches in this series of blogs.
The first person featured is a great football player that some people might best know because he was bitten by Luis Suarez. We’re talking about Giorgio Chiellini, who currently plays for the Italian football team Juventus. Chiellini, a defender, was a member of the Italian national team during the FIFA Football World Cup in Brazil. Giorgio Chiellini has been spotted with a few watches from different brands, which we have listed for you here.
Chiellini recently got married and was spotted on that day with a Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Offshore on his wrist. The original Royal Oak, as introduced in 1972, was designed by the famed watch designer Gerald Genta, and discussed here, here and here on Monochrome. The Offshore is the younger, sportier (and more muscled), brother of the Royal Oak that was introduced in 1993.
The next watch spotted on his wrist is a Rolex, more specifically a Cosmograph Daytona. The Daytona is an iconic chronograph model which has gone through a fair share of changes since it was first launched in 1963. Just last year Rolex introduced a full platinum version with ice-blue dial for its 50th anniversary. On the wrist of Chiellini is the reference 116509 in 18K white gold with a black dial and red accents.
The third watch we have spotted on his wrist is in my opinion the pick of the bunch. It is another Gerald Genta designed timepiece, the Patek Philippe Nautilus. From the photos we found it looks the ref. 5711, a Nautilus in stainless steel that indicates hour, minutes, seconds and the date. Giorgio Chiellini is definitely a man of good tastes.
Next week another Watching Celeb Watches.
