The Subtle Upgrades of the Oris Aquis Date Collection

Well-calibrated and non-invasive design upgrades enhance the look and feel of the successful Aquis Date.

| By Rebecca Doulton | 5 min read |

During Watches & Wonders 2024, Oris unveiled a new generation of its Aquis Date, the brand’s best-selling dive watch. While radically altering the design of your best-selling watch dive watch could alienate your loyal customer base and create an incoherent identity, Oris has limited its intervention to subtle design tweaks. Enhancing the watch visibly and physically, these well-calibrated, almost imperceptible alterations make the Oris Aquis Date more elegant, comfortable to wear and balanced without sacrificing its performance-oriented dive watch identity.

Launched in 2011, the Aquis Date was designed as a muscular, water-resistant toolwatch. Appealing to divers and landlubbers alike, the Aquis is considered a solid, contemporary, performance- and value-oriented model. Underscoring its importance in the collection, the 43.5mm version of the Aquis Date was the first model to be equipped with the brand’s new automatic proprietary Calibre 400 with a five-day power reserve, anti-magnetic components and a 10-year warranty.

What’s New for the Oris Aquis Date?

Catering to a wide range of wrist sizes, the new Aquis Date models are offered in 43.5mm, 41.5mm and 36.5mm cases. All the models are equipped with the Oris 733 Sellita-based automatic movement except for the 43.5mm, which can be ordered with the 733 or the brand’s proprietary, powerful Calibre 400.

The first upgrade can be appreciated on the case with its shorter and more ergonomic lugs and tapering crown guards. Also, the brand announced a slight reduction of the thickness for all models, respectively at 13.1mm, 12.9mm and 12.2mm for the 43.5mm, 41.5mm and 36.5mm cases – versus 13.7mm, 13.3mm and 12.5mm in the past.

Another noticeable refinement is the new stainless steel bracelet with redesigned links, broader, brushed central links and a more tapering profile. However, the new, practical quick-adjust clasp system, letting you make small adjustments without having to take the watch off your wrist, as well as the quick-release strap system, are only available on the flagship 43.5mm Calibre 400 and the smallest 36.5mm models. A slightly curious choice…

The unidirectional rotating bezel with a ceramic insert has been reproportioned, and the dial displays the sharper outline of the Alpha hour and minute hands and the shield-shaped hour markers. A new typeface was developed for the inscriptions on the dial, but, like so many of the upgrades, is only noticeable on close inspection. One upgrade that does not escape the eye is the background of the date aperture, which now matches the dial colour.

Common to all the case sizes, regardless of the movement below deck, is the incorporation of an Aquis Date Upcycle model with a recycled PET plastic dial. In keeping with the brand’s commitment to sustainability, the new packaging is made from 50% recycled cardboard and paper, reducing the weight and consumption of plastic materials.

Although the subtle evolutions have been applied across the board of all Aquis Date models, the 36.5mm version has been more aggressively redesigned to adapt to the concept that “many women want watches created for women, and a piece of jewellery.” The bezel is narrower and now features a ceramic insert with engraved markers as opposed to the raised Arabic numerals and markers of earlier editions. The case features more polished areas, and the new H-design bracelet is exclusive to this model.

Aquis Date Calibre 400 43.5mm

The flagship of the new-generation Aquis Date, the 43.5mm model towers above the rest thanks to its high-performance proprietary Calibre 400 movement with its five-day power reserve, anti-magnetic properties and 10-year guarantee. Presented with blue or green dials, paired with a stainless steel bracelet or matching-coloured rubber strap and an Upcycle model with a tungsten insert in the bezel, these models come with the brand’s patented quick strap-change system and quick-adjustment clasp system.

Three dial choices, in black, cream mother-of-pearl or recycled PET plastic, with SLN-treated hands and indices, are available. The new H-design bracelet, unique to this sub-collection, is fitted with the new quick-adjust clasp system. 1. This is a very intriguing update, as it appears more will be forthcoming from Oris. I’ve been a big fan of their divers, especially the Goldilocks 41.5mm case size. I remained hopeful for a 41.5mm all-brushed model with a brushed ceramic bezel, but the slimmer suggests a more stylish, almost dressy diver. I can’t wait to see it n person.
