If the Aikon collection has been at the forefront recently for the brand, there’s far more to Maurice Lacroix of course. The Maurice Lacroix Pontos for instance is a well-established collection within the brand and is also available in many guises. From a classy dress watch to dive watches and even a monopusher chronograph, there’s a lot going on with the Pontos. The collection was refreshed in 2020, and now the Pontos Chronograph gets a sporty makeover. This is the new Maurice Lacroix Pontos S Chronograph, and we discussed it with the brand’s managing director, Stephane Waser, at the HQ of the Mahindra racing team.
While the collection has been around for quite some years already, the Pontos has been drastically refreshed in 2020 with new models, including Day-Date watches and a rather streamlined and overall elegant chronograph watch. Presented with a clean case, a smooth bezel and applied numerals on the dial, it was more on the classic side of watchmaking. But this year, the Pontos becomes an “S” model. And yes, S stands for Sports.
The new Maurice Lacroix Pontos S Chronograph retains most elements of design found in the classic Pontos watches, such as the overall contemporary look and the signature stepped lugs. However, some new attributes and evolutions are bringing a more racing-like feeling. It here comes in a 43mm stainless steel case with the familiar Pontos design. The biggest difference to the existing Pontos Chronographs is the external black ceramic bezel with a tachymeter scale. And its brushed surface only enhances this sporty look. The crown is flanked by two elongated chronograph pushers, just like its siblings. And with its 100m water-resistance, the watch is not going to let you down on a weekend at the beach either.
The dial of the Pontos S Chronograph is also showing some notable evolutions, as you’ll be able to see in the video on top. From a classic look with date at 6 o’clock, subtly circled sub-dials and applied Arabic numerals, we now move to a bolder and more contrasted look. The major change concerns the hour markers, which are now large applied faceted batons. Also, the element framing the sub-dial is more pronounced and the date has been changed to a day-date function, now positioned at 3 o’clock. On the two dial colours, the small seconds at 9 o’clock is discreetly integrated, leaving more space for the chronograph counters. And a small dash of red on the seconds hand brings the racing touch.
Colours have been updated too, and the Maurice Lacroix Pontos S Chronograph comes with fresh new dials. First is a full-blue model, with tone-on-tone sub-counters. The second watch, a so-called Panda, has a silvery-white base with contrasting counters in black – but only for the two main ones at 12 and 6 o’clock, resulting in a balanced dial. Under the hood is a robust chronograph movement, based on the automatic Sellita SW500 architecture.
The final touch comes from the new straps. While you’ll still have the option of a steel bracelet, Maurice Lacroix presents here new textile straps that are again enhancing the sporty look of the new Pontos. These are closed by a folding clasp.
