Union Glashütte Launches the New and Powerful Belisar Chronograph Sport

A contemporary, dashing, all-black chronograph from UG.

| By Rebecca Doulton | 2 min read |

German brand Union Glashütte has a wide range of chronographs interpreted in different styles in its Belisar, Noramis and Averin collections. The latest Belisar Chronograph Sport is a new sub-collection which exchanges the more overt vintage styling of some former references for a more contemporary look and feel. Black is the key player of this new 43mm chronograph with its black DLC coatings, black ceramic bezel and black textured dial. Union Glashütte’s latest chronograph is a racy, attractive, versatile sports watch with solid mechanics and a competitive price.

The muscular 43mm case of the new Belisar Chronograph Sport has a thickness of 14.65mm and features the collection’s hallmark screw-down flanks. The flanks and the crown protectors are treated with a racy black DLC coating that protrudes slightly beneath the lugs, producing a sleek black bevel. In contrast, the pushers and crown are brightly polished. Fitted with a domed sapphire crystal with an anti-reflective coating over the dial and a sapphire window on the caseback, the watch delivers 100m water-resistance, more than enough for an all-rounder sporty chronograph.

Viewed from the side, the two rectangular chronograph pushers have the words Reset and Start/Stop engraved in relief and embedded in black varnish like the large U in the crown. The third pusher at 10 o’clock is to correct the date. Crafted in glossy black ceramic, the bezel has a tachymeter scale with white numerals and markings.

Black is the principal protagonist of the Belisar Chronograph Sport, and the black dial is decorated with a series of horizontal gadroons or grooves embossed in the centre of the dial, adding interest and texture to the composition. Three sub-dials – 30-minute counter at 3 o’clock, 12-hour totaliser at 6 o’clock, small seconds at 9 o’clock –  stand out against the grooved background with their matte black interiors and white markings. Matching the yellow tip of the central chronograph seconds, the two hands for the chronograph counters have a yellow lacquered strip. While date apertures have their detractors, the date window tucked into the 12-hour counter is remarkably discreet.

The chapter ring, decorated with a series of concentric circles that look like the spiral grooves of old-school vinyl records, hosts the applied hour markers and the large Arabic numeral 12, all treated with blue emission Super-LumiNova matching the skeletonised hour and minute hands.

The reverse side reveals the brand’s UNG-27SI automatic (Valjoux 7750 base) cam-operated chronograph movement with an anti-magnetic silicon hairspring, a 4Hz frequency and an extended 65-hour power reserve.

The new Belisar Chronograph Sport is delivered with two interchangeable straps: a black textile strap with a yellow underside and a rally-style leather strap with perforations and an additional fastener. It retails for EUR 3,900 (incl. tax). For more information, please consult union-glashuette.com.

  1. Agreed – no way at north of 4k. My chronograph has better specs (20atm and 42mm × 46mm), the same movement and cost 3k.

  2. Well done UG … it feels as though the designs are getting better over time. Great to see the positive comments on pricing – always useful to know someone once paid less for a completely different watch 😉

  3. Don’t look at the paper dimensions, the watch wears like a dream. Case height is masked by being split into sections (e.g. case back hides in wrist, black dlc coated panels break slab sides optically etc.). Overall case profile is very comfortable and sits low on the wrist, the watch is not too heavy. I got an 18-18,5 cm wrist and absolutely loved it! Quality of brushing is amazing, this watch is absolutely worth its price.
