The New Serica Travel Chronometer Golden Green Ref. 8315-3
The brand's sports GMT tool comes back in a new, rather unsual combination of colours.
Known for its seriously built and vintage-inspired collection of tool watches, French brand Serica is releasing a new edition of its sports GMT model, the Travel Chronometer. This is one of the few watches from the brand that we have never explored, as we’ve already looked at the 6190 Field collection, the highly original Parade, the Dive Chronometer or the compact 7505 Field Chronometer. And for our first encounter with this travel-oriented collection, we’ll be looking at the brand new Travel Chronometer Golden Green Ref. 8315-3, a model that introduces a rather original combination of colours.
Like the rest of the brand’s collection, the 8315 Travel Chronometer is clear on its inspirations: a rather compact case, vintage-inspired details, serious tool-watch credentials, and a contemporary execution with a level of quality that’s fairly impressive. Framed by a wide rotating bezel (oversized bezels are a signature element of many Serica watches), the steel case of this new Golden Green edition remains unchanged, sharing the same architecture as the existing black and brown versions of the 8315.
This means a robust 200m water-resistant watch with on-par dimensions: 39.5mm in diameter, 12.30mm in thickness (relatively decent for a robust GMT) and 46.5mm in lug-to-lug, making it a comfortable watch for most men’s wrists. The case is mostly brushed with well-positioned polished accents, including on the bevels running along the side of the lugs. As expected, a thick 2mm domed sapphire crystal covers the dial; the back is solid steel and screwed to the case, and so does the crown.
Now, about the bidirectional bezel, which is the main novelty here. At least its colours. Made from a single block of ceramic, the two-tone element is first unusually divided between AM and PM hours, with the daytime zone longer than the night hours. The idea is first to get closer to reality, and then to improve readability by not having numerals cut in half. As for the colours, it pairs an ivory PM area with a new “golden green” tone for the AM hours – a rather difficult tone to capture in photos and to describe with words. Somewhere between light khaki and coffee, yet really nice and soft in the metal. Plus, as always with Serica, the action of the bezel is smooth and very pleasant.
As for the dial, Serica has given its 8315 Travel Chronometer Golden Green a new colour to match the bezel, with an enamel-like dark olive green tone, paired with yellow gold accents for the marker outlines and printing. Then again, a tone that is quite hard to capture in photos. For the rest, the layout with its singularly positioned hour markers and its white lacquered broad arrow hands is intact, and the GMT hand retains its legible lollipop tip. Of course, all elements are largely coated in Super-LumiNova.
Inside the case is a movement sourced from Soprod, the Calibre C125, here in a COSC-certified version. Running at 28,800 vibrations/hour, it boasts 42 hours of power reserve and is an caller/office style GMT, with the 24h hand adjusted independently – not to blame Serica, but movement makers such as Soprod and Sellita should up their game and offer flyer-style GMT movements.
The final touch for this rather cool sports GMT watch is a rather special steel bracelet named “Expedition”. Connected to the case thanks to signature guilloché-like end-links, it combines a mesh/woven central part with thin polished links on the outer edge. Thin, flexible and yet robust, it elevates the style of the watch and adds to its overall appeal.
Released as part of the permanent collection, the new Serica Travel Chronometer Golden Green Ref. 8315-3 is now available and priced at EUR 2,090 or USD 2,450. For more details, please visit serica-watches.com.
