The Laurent Ferrier Classic Origin Blue

A refined blue colour for the alluring Classic Origin in titanium.

| By Robin Nooy | 2 min read |

Laurent Ferrier is one of those brands in the independent watchmaking scene that everybody seems to love. And rightfully so, as some of its collections are drop-dead gorgeous and come with fascinating details and superbly finished movements. Ever since the independent watchmaker kicked things off in 2010, it has been highly regarded as one of the best in the business, and Laurent Ferrier proves it once again with the Classic Origin Blue, a new twist on existing architecture.

The Classic Origin remains one of Laurent Ferrier’s most refined watches, despite the fact it is also the simplest of the collection. With a subtle time-only design full of fascinating details, it is truly a lovely slice of independent watchmaking. Perhaps even more so in this new blue guise, a colour that happens to be among the favourite of Mr Laurent Ferrier himself. And with that in mind, it seems odd it took so long for blue to find its way into the Classic Origin, but we’re not complaining one bit!

The overall shape and design of the case haven’t changed. Following the introduction of the Classic Origin Opaline for the brand’s 10th anniversary in 2020, this too uses a grade 5 titanium case. Coming in at 40mm across and 11.10mm in height, the case is fully polished and fitted with a ball-shaped crown at 3 o’clock. Naturally, a sapphire crystal covers both the front and back of the case.

The dial has been given a fantastic gradient blue make-over, shifting from light to darker blue from the centre outward. On the outer perimeter of the dial is a powdery-grey hour track with sky-blue numerals. The applied drop-shaped indices are made of 18k white gold, as are the javelin-shaped hour and minute hands. The snailed and slightly recessed small seconds subdial has a sky-blue scale as well, with a white gold hand.

Inside the Classic Origin Blue ticks the familiar Calibre LF 116.01 which we know from the Classic Origin Opaline and the Classic Origin Green. This manually wound movement is constructed using 150 components, including 21 jewels. Running at a frequency of 21,600vph, it provides a very generous 80 hours of autonomy. It includes a classic Swiss lever escapement and a long-blade ratchet, which can be heard and felt while winding it. The detailing is impeccable, as you can expect from Laurent Ferrier, with bevelled and polished edges, gold0coulred engravings and a microbead finishing on the bridges.

The Laurent Ferrier Classic Origin Blue is worn on a midnight-blue Nubuck leather strap with a blue Alcantara lining and a grade 5 titanium pin buckle. The retail price is CHF 31,000 before taxes.
