TAG Heuer adds a traveller's function to its newly presented Carrera Heuer 02 Chronograph.
The Carrera is celebrating its 55th anniversary this year. To celebrate, TAG Heuer isn’t looking at the past but instead remains true to its “avant-garde” identity. They could have chosen to go vintage. Instead, they gold bold and modern. After the presentation a few weeks ago of the new Carrera Heuer 02 Chronograph with an updated movement, Baselworld 2018 brings us the traveller’s version, the TAG Heuer Carrera Heuer 02 GMT Chronograph.
The modern version of the Carrera, launched at Baselworld 2015, quickly became a best-seller for TAG Heuer. With its deeply reinterpreted design, its bold design, its skeletonized movement and dozens of possible versions – thanks to a modular architecture where parts can be switched easily to create new models – the Carrera Heuer 01 represented the “avant-garde” side of TAG. A few weeks ago, the brand announced an evolution of this watch, which will soon incorporate TAG’s new in-house movement, the Calibre 02, as well as a more balanced 3-6-9 layout for the chronograph counters.
For Baselworld 2018, a new complication is added to this watch – already announced without being officially presented. The TAG Heuer Carrera Heuer 02 GMT Chronograph, as you’ve guessed with its name, now adds a convenient traveller’s function, thanks to a centrally-mounted GMT hand and a 24h bezel.
For the inaugural edition of this Carrera Heuer 02 GMT, the folks at TAG have decided to go classical, with a full stainless steel case and lugs. No contrasting materials here – even though other versions, with black DLC-coated parts, titanium or gold will certainly be presented. This new edition will be available with a steel bracelet or a rubber strap and is presented in the largest case, at 45mm in diameter.
The novelties compared to the standard Carrera Heuer 02, in addition to the larger case, are visible on the bezel and the dial. The bezel is here made of two-tone ceramic, in black and blue (seems quite familiar, isn’t it?) and engraved with a 24h scale. The dial also receives an extra GMT hand, in red. The second time-zone can be easily adjusted by the crown.
The chronograph movement, equal to other Carrera Heuer 02, is still visible through the open-worked dial – which has a nice layout, with two sub-counters in silver and one in blue. This Heuer 02 movement, developed and manufactured in-house, is an integrated chronograph with vertical clutch, column-wheel and 75h power reserve.
