The Roger Dubuis Excalibur Spider Flyback Chronograph in Lamborghini’s SC63 Livery
Hyper horology meets Lamborghini’s hypercar.
Just ahead of the 24 Hours of Le Mans (this Saturday), Roger Dubuis fetes its partnership with Lamborghini Squadra Corse with a special Verde Mantis version of its Excalibur Spider Flyback Chronograph. This year, Lamborghini will compete in the Le Mans Daytona Hybrid Series with its first hypercar, the SC63. Flying the SC63’s signature paintwork, the chronograph is packed with allusions to the hypercar and the world of motorsports.
Since 2017, Roger Dubuis and Lamborghini Squadra Corse have forged an alliance resulting in high-octane Excalibur Spider timepieces that reflect the Italian marque’s incredible sportscars. The new Excalibur Spider Flyback Chronograph is similar to the inaugural 2023 model but flaunts the SC63’s Verde Mantis green, Nero Noctis (black) and Tricolore colours.
A rarity in watchmaking, the integrated chronograph movement is exposed on the dial, revealing details like the column wheel, the tilted balance wheel and the twin barrels at noon. The movement’s compelling 3D architecture is exhibited beneath a symmetrical bridge with three green bars and luminous inserts that emulate the SC63’s distinctive Y-shaped headlights.
The two-level flange around the dial has a red and green minutes/seconds track with white-lumed hour plots and a tachymeter scale. Where things get interesting is the display for the chronograph’s elapsed times, which are relayed on a 120º rotating minutes counter at 3 o’clock with a tripartite hand and green lacquered numerals. The white gold hour and minute hands have luminescent red tips, while the central chronograph seconds hand is red. Given the amount of information, it’s easy to miss the double-digit date aperture at 6 o’clock.
Made from lightweight grey carbon with a notched ceramic bezel outlined in green, the 45mm chronograph is 17.13mm thick and water-resistant to 100m.
Powered by calibre RD780, which has two patents pending for the second breaking system and the rotating minute counter, this automatic movement has a frequency of 4Hz and a 72-hour power reserve. As a Poinçon de Genève certified watch, the finishings are of the highest grade.
A sporty black rubber strap with a Verde Mantis inlay and a triple-folding clasp complete the package. The Flyback Chronograph is a limited edition of 88 pieces and retails for CHF 104,500, EUR 95,833 or USD 107,500 (all prices without tax). For more information, please consult rogerdubuis.com.
