The New Ralph Lauren Polo Sport Collection
Bold colours give the new all-rounder Polo Sport a sharper, sportier and more contemporary look
Ralph Lauren’s colossal lifestyle emporium is an ode to his vision of laid-back luxury with products ranging from tableware to pinstripe suits and watches. The American designer’s iconic Polo shirt of 1972, with its equestrian polo player logo, would become one of the brand’s most universal products and a classic piece of America’s homegrown preppy look. Ralph Lauren’s Polo watch collection appeared in 2018, flaunting the brand’s trademark polo player on the dial. The new Polo Sport watches do not feature the polo player on the dial and play with colours, textures and materials to produce a sharper, sportier and more contemporary look. However, there can be no doubt about the provenance of these models thanks to the overt branding on the dial and strap.
Watches are relatively newcomers to Ralph Lauren’s universe and were added to the mix in 2008. Grouped thematically, the Stirrup and Polo collections play with the brand’s love of all things equestrian; the Automotive collection takes design cues from Ralph Lauren’s fabulous vintage car collection; the 867 Collection taps into his love for Art Deco design; and the Safari is designed for great outdoor adventures. While the designs are American, all the mechanical models are powered by Swiss movements.
As one of the brand’s strongest clothing lines, it was only natural for a watch line to materialise bearing the name Polo. Available with the trademark polo player on the dial, a retro Vintage 67 reference or a teddy bear dressed in signature Ralph Lauren attire, the latest eye-catching Polo Sport models are positioned as all-rounder sports watches.
The new Polo Sport comes in a 42mm diameter polished stainless steel case with a thickness of 12.35mm. The 60-minute rotating bezel is made from green or blue anodised aluminium with white numerals and markings. The caseback is sealed, the large crown has the polo pony logo, and the water-resistance is 100 metres. So far, the specs are identical, save for the omission of the word Polo on the bezel.
Styled like a bull’s eye, the dial plays with three colours. The centre is a matte blue colour with thick snailing followed by a yellow and black ring and a thicker black lacquered chapter ring on the periphery with wide white luminescent printed hour markers, a precision minutes track and an inverted triangle at noon. The black lacquered sword-shaped hour and minute hands are also treated with white Super-LumiNova, as is the red lacquered central seconds hand with its SLN-treated tip.
Speaking about branding, the dial has printed Polo and Ralph Lauren prominently in white at noon, and the comfortable orange or red rubber strap is embossed with Polo not once but twice and further highlighted with black letters. As you can imagine, there are countless strap options on the brand’s website.
The watch is powered by the calibre RL200 based on a Sellita SW200-1 automatic with a frequency of 4Hz, a power reserve of 38 hours and stop-seconds. The Ralph Lauren Polo Sport Watch retails for EUR 1,690, USD 1,690 or CHF 1,550 and is available at select Ralph Lauren stores worldwide and online.

Not one pic with the bezel centered on 60 and 12 oclock is either very contrarian or very clueless. Case and dial look nice. Bit big. Nothing special here at all.
