Pre Baselworld 2014: Introducing the Ulysse Nardin Dual Time Manufacture with In-House Movement

Ulysse Nardin Dual Time Manufacture

For many years Ulysse Nardin have been making one of the most convenient dual time zone watches in the market. Typically one of Ludwig Oechslin’s inventions, which makes it possible to adjust the second time zone and DATE both forward and backward! During Baselworld 2014 Ulysse Nardin will launch the newest version featuring their in-house movement: the Dual Time Manufacture.

Earlier Ulysse Nardin already equipped the Marine collection with the new in-house movement, that utilizes silicon for both the escapement (anchor, escape wheel and roller) and hairspring. Caliber UN-334 beats at a steady pace of 4 Hz (28,800 vph) and has a power reserve of 48 hours. This movement has been developed and manufactured entirely in-house. The new Dual Time Manufacture comes in 4 different flavors: the case is made in stainless steel or 18 karat rose gold, and each version has two choices of dials: silver or black.

Oh, and actually there are 2 more choices, because for the stainless steel version you can choose between the alligator leather strap and a stainless steel bracelet.

The Dual Time Manufacture is a perfect business man traveler’s watch. The possibility to change the second time zone (local time) both forward and backward is maybe nothing out of the ordinary, however the ingenuity that the date also changes in sync with the second time zone, both forward and backward, is simply brilliant. The Dual Time Manufacture is endowed with the Big Date double window display.

In the blink of an eye, you can see the time at home, that is displayed with a 24-hour numeral, visible through a small aperture at the 9 o’clock position. This helps every traveler not to accidentally wake you beloved ones with a phone call, because the 24-hour home time indication immediately makes clear whether it’s day time or night time for your loved ones (or hard working co-workers).

How it works…

While the home time indicator advances steadily over 24 hours in the aperture at 9 o’clock, the hour hand can easily be aligned with local time. To adjust the hour hand either forward or backward, simply press the (+) or (-) pushers positioned at 10 o’clock and 8 o’clock. You can do this without removing the watch from your wrist or interrupting the watch from timekeeping.

Some specifications:

  • Case: 18 ct gold or stainless steel, 42 mm in diameter, 30 meters water-resistant, sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating in the front, sapphire crystal in the case back
  • Movement: in-house caliber UN-334, self-winding, silicium escapement (anchor, escape wheel and roller), patented inertia balance wheel with silicium hairspring, 49 jewels, 48 h power reserve

  1. Very useful complication, versatile design, in-house movement…This is a serious contender. The case design is a big improvement over the previous generation, though would be more sensible at 40mm.

  2. An understandable reaction, RSG, however I’d recommend to try it on the wrist. Sometimes a watch wears smaller than we think.

  3. Somehow my home time has advanced by two hours and while I can quickly and easily change the local time I cannot find instructions to reset the home time. Can anyone help me?
