Porsche Design Launches Its Custom-Built Timepieces Program
Configure and create your one-of-a-kind Porsche Design Chronograph watch.
Porsche Design watches have a long tradition of automotive influence, in particular, the iconic 911 that has been a source of inspiration for multiple models in the brand’s range. Today, Porsche Design up its game to propose something that is directly evoking the car industry, with the launch of a programme based on production principles utilised in Porsche sports car manufacturing. This is the Custom-Built Timepieces Program, allowing you to fully customize a Porsche Design timepiece, perfectly tailored to match your dream Porsche.
The centrepiece: the watch configurator
Based on what’s already existing to create your perfect Porsche car, Porsche Design has created a configurator, where the watch is digitally visualised down to the smallest detail to provide customers with a realistic depiction of their dream timepiece (based on CAD data from designers at Studio F. A. Porsche in Zell am See and engineers in Solothurn). In addition to the capacity to discover your future watch in real-time, the pricing for each respective configuration will be immediately updated – starting from EUR 4,950 and up to EUR 11,600, depending on the options.
The options
The first step in the configuration of your custom-built Porsche Design Chronograph is the case, with a choice between a glass-bead-blasted natural titanium case or a black titanium case coated in titanium carbide via PVD – titanium is a natural choice for Porsche Design, which pioneered the use of this material in watchmaking.
If the movement used in the watches will always be the same, there are still some options “under the hood” too. The watches are powered by the proprietary calibre WERK 01.100, a highly modified Valjoux architecture with flyback function and COSC certification, manufactured upon Porsche Design’s requests. The customization program includes a choice of rotors, featuring the wheel designs of the latest-generation Porsche 911. From the classic 911 Carrera rim to the 911 Carrera Exclusive Design wheel version with a gold badge at its centre, there are six different rotor types to choose from. The colour on the rotor edge can also be customised, just like the outer edges of the wheels of a Porsche car.
Of course, one of the most natural elements to be customized on a watch is its strap and the Porsche Design Custom-Built Timepieces Program doesn’t skip this part. There are no fewer than 300 different possible configurations – from metal bracelets glass-bead-blasted natural titanium or black-coated titanium carbide, or leather straps in the 14 official interior colour options of the Porsche 911, and with 19 different colours of genuine Porsche yarn available. Every watch from the Porsche Design Custom-Built Timepieces Program will be delivered with 3 different straps/bracelets and all are equipped with the brand’s new quick-change side button system that makes it easy to change them without the use of any tools.
Moving on with the options, Porsche Design also brings attention to the dial details, as it can also be customized, via inlaid coloured rings. There are 27 Porsche 911 exterior and interior colours to choose from. The hands can also be personalized, as available in 2 different colours. The type of bezel can be chosen too, either with traditional minute markers or with a tachymeter scale.
The final touch for this Porsche Design customization program will be a laser engraving on the back of the case. Altogether, and excluding this engraving (which will always remain personal), the program offers more than 1.5 million options.
Where to get your Custom-Built Porsche Design
Once the watch is finally configurated on a dedicated website at www.porsche-design.com, a code identifying the specific options that they have selected is sent. The code can be used to start the order process with any Porsche dealer. The order is then sent to the timepiece manufacturing facility in Solothurn and forwarded to suppliers. The entire process from order placement to delivery takes between eight and 12 weeks. Alternatively, customers have the option of receiving their personalized chronograph when they take delivery of their new car.
The Porsche Design Custom-Built Timepieces program will be available in Germany in July 2020, followed by the U.S. in September 2020 and orders can be placed at all Porsche dealers nationwide.
