Two masters of ultra-thin now rendered in a bold combination green and gold.
As one of the main competitors in the battle for the thinnest watches, Piaget has had quite a few records on its hands, using the emblematic Altiplano watch collection as the vessel to deliver record-thin models. The Altiplano Ultimate Concept (AUC) made some noise by becoming the thinnest mechanical watch ever in 2016, and the AUC Tourbillon broke the record in 2024 with its 2mm thin case. But we should also remember the highly appealing Altiplano 910P, which was the world’s thinnest automatic watch back in 2018. Both have lost on the battlefield, with Bulgari regaining the titles, yet there’s a lot to still love in these technically impressive watches. Especially with these new models mixing khaki green and yellow gold.
Altiplano 910P Khaki Green
The worthy descendant of the 2mm manual-winding 9P calibre in 1957, followed by the automatic 12P calibre with a height of just 2.3mm presented during the Basel Fair of 1960, the Altiplano 910P was first launched in 2018 and impressed back then for being the thinnest automatic watch ever, at only 4.3mm in height. The construction of the 41mm Altiplano Ultimate Automatic calibre 910P is truly revolutionary, relying on two clever watchmaking tricks. First, winding is done by a peripheral rotor circling the movement, avoiding adding some of the thickness implied by a classic centrally-mounted rotor. This year, Piaget introduces a new colour scheme to the Altiplano collection, with khaki green as the main colour, adorned with yellow gold accents. For the Altiplano Ultimate 910P, it is made by using an 18k yellow case paired with a green alligator strap. The same combination is used for the “face” of the watch (there is no proper dial, again to save thickness). The whole movement has been coated in khaki green, with the recessed and off-centred dial using yellow gold hands to indicate the time. New to the model, it draws direct inspiration from the AUC Tourbillon, with the same subtle cross-shaped pattern appearing on the dial screws.
AUC Tourbillon
A proper technical feat, the Altiplano Ultimate Concept Tourbillon, often named the AUC Tourbillon, made headlines in early 2024 as the thinnest tourbillon watch ever made, measuring a mere 2mm in height – the same as the non-tourbillon AUC. This was made possible by using the same overall architecture, with the cobalt case serving as a main plate for the movement, an uncompromised conception for all the parts, a tourbillon cage that is guided peripherally by ball bearings, and a new barrel that can cope with the additional energy required by the tourbillon regulator. This year, the AUC Tourbillon follows the same colour scheme as the 910P above, yet retains its 41.5mm x 2mm case made out of cobalt alloy – gold would be strong enough in this case. But the new edition is now fitted with a movement partially coated in khaki green, with gold accents around the tourbillon cage and on the hands. It is paired with a green, textured calfskin strap with Kevlar inserts. In addition, the AUC Tourbillon will now join the AUC and the Andy Warhol collection as part of Piaget’s Infinitely Personal program.
