Nivada Grenchen has always seemed like a brand that embraces the fun side of life, and its latest release, the Antarctic Erotic, is proof of that. In watchmaking, erotic or animated scenes have existed for centuries, often hidden away and revealed only on demand. Nivada uses this heritage with a lighter, more contemporary tone without provocation, but surprise, humour, and interaction. Built on the familiar Antarctic 38mm platform, this new series keeps the core idea of a robust, vintage-inspired daily watch, but adds a touch of humour that feels unexpected, but very much on-brand.

At first glance, nothing seems out of the ordinary. The Antarctic remains a compact, well-proportioned exploration watch with its characteristic Spider case, alternating brushed and polished finishes, and a range of appealing dial options. New executions, ranging from warm salmon tones to softer beige, bring freshness to the collection. It’s still a watch you can wear every day without a second thought. But flip it over, and things get more interesting.

Visible through a sapphire window, a small automaton comes to life when the watch is wound. Driven by the winding mechanism, the system transforms a simple operation into a private moment of discovery – Discovery Channel-like, of course. It’s playful and intentionally discreet, something for the owner rather than the audience.

The watch is powered by a modified hand-wound Soprod P054 calibre (clone of the ETA 2801, a hand-wound version of the ETA 2824), adapted to drive the animation. The ratchet wheel has been reworked into a cam system, converting the motion of winding into a vertical action that animates the scene.

Beyond the novelty, there’s also substance. The Antarctic name is rooted in real exploration history, dating back to 1954 when the model accompanied early expeditions to the South Pole. Penguins became a symbol of that story, often engraved on casebacks. Here, they return with movement, character, and a touch of irreverence.

Still, the project isn’t just playful. Nivada Grenchen has partnered with Oceanites, an organisation dedicated to monitoring penguin populations in Antarctica. The brand has effectively “adopted” a colony of 21,000 birds, with part of the project’s budget supporting ongoing research and conservation efforts.

The Antarctic Erotic remains versatile. It can be paired with classic Beads of Rice or Flat Links bracelets or worn on rubber or leather straps. This proper tool watch with a sense of humour is priced from EUR 1,600 (leather) to EUR 1,805 (bracelet). Pre-order opens April 30 at 4PM Geneva Time, with a 69-minute pre-order window for the salmon dial, 69-hour pre-order window for the beige model; other versions will be available to order during the 6.9-day period. 1. The date for the tuxedo dial is a bit unclear but I’m quite interested.
