The Fun Mido Commander 1959 Pixel Dial

A fun watch that mixes vintage shape and modernist dial.

| By Brice Goulard | 2 min read |

With watches such as the Multifort Mechanical, the Ocean Star 39, or the Decompression Timer 1961, Swatch Group-owned brand Mido seems to be on a roll regarding dial creativity. Fun, colourful, original and bold, the brand’s latest creations stand apart with the use of unusual designs and clever application of SLN to add even more pleasure at night. Based on the classic Commander 1959, the brand’s latest watch makes no exception to the rule with a pixel-inspired dial with a vibrant interplay of squares in pink, blue and luminescent details.

The geometry of pixels symbolises the digital revolution. Fun and daring, the Pixel Art style is the quirky embodiment of this universe. This time, its playfulness now lights up the dial of a classic by Mido, the Commander 1959. A myriad of squares in shades of blue and pink pop against the black background of the dial. At night, there is a surprise in store, thanks to a clever use of luminescence. At night, the dial of the Commander 1959 Pixel, decorated with coloured Super-LumiNova, comes alive to create a whole new face. The dial itself has been decorated with a meticulous arrangement of pixels printed on the dial’s black background, creating a geometric cloud. Legibility isn’t compromised, however, thanks to large and contrasting diamond-cut hands and polished indexes. The hands shows a combination of black and Super-LumiNova insert, the applied markers have a black insert and the polished inner flange has received some luminous dots to give contrast day and night.

Aside from this modernist take on the dial, the Mido Commander 1959 Pixel remains faithful to the codes of the collection, starting with its monoblock, lug-free case attached to a cool-looking Milanese bracelet. Its late 1950s vintage flair is reinforced by the use of a streamlined bezel and a domed acrylic crystal, creating a streamlined, almost pebble-like shape. The back, an integral part of the case, is solid steel and water-resistance is rated at 50m. What we’re looking at here is a compact watch of 37mm x 10.5mm, which will only be reinforced by the absence of lugs, making it ultra-short on the wrist.

Inside the case, the Commander 1959 uses Swatch Group’s evolution of the ETA 2824, the now classic Powermatic Calibre 80. A revised version of an emblematic ETA movement, it has been reworked with a lower frequency (3Hz), a revised kinetic chain, all for the sake of a longer power reserve of 80 hours. It is also equipped with a Nivachron balance spring, adding resistance to magnetism, temperature variations, and shocks.

Available now as part of the permanent collection, the fun and colourful Mido Commander 1959 Pixel Dial retails for a very fair price of EUR 790. For more details, please visit www.midowatches.com.
