Taking its inspiration from yesteryear’s rudimentary tower and table clocks, MeisterSinger has built a solid brand and rich collection around a rather unusual premise: all its watches are equipped with a single hand. The philosophy behind the single hand is to offer a more leisurely, less manic approach to timekeeping in our information-saturated lives. The latest single-handed model from the German brand founded by Manfred Brassler in 2001 is the 24-Hour Edition. As its name suggests, the new model displays all 24 hours of a day on the dial, indicated by a single hand that completes a revolution every 24 hours.

A month ago, MeisterSinger teased us with the 24H Enamel Edition, a 25-piece limited edition that displays all the hours of our days and nights, complete with compass markings. The new 24H model is also a limited edition of 100 pieces, but it does not feature compass markings. Instead of artificially dividing the day into two halves, MeisterSinger presents the 24-hour period as a whole, allowing us to see the day and nighttime hours at a glance.

Like the 24-hour military time clock, a 24-hour watch ensures there is no confusion or ambiguity between 7:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m.: the first reading is expressed as 0700 hours and the second 1900. The primary difficulty of a 24-hour watch is getting accustomed to seeing all 24 hours represented in the same space used by more conventional watches that display 12 hours and complete two revolutions around the dial each day.

Presented in a 40mm polished stainless steel Pangea case, the simple lines of the case, with its large conical winding crown, ensure the dial gets plenty of breathing space. Decorated with a sunburst finish, the blue dial plays with the light, producing a silky sheen.

To enhance legibility, the dial features applied gold double digits for even numbers, accompanied by smaller white numerals for odd numbers. Regarding the accuracy of the minutes, the peripheral track does not feature the usual 5-minute markings; instead, its fine lines and dots indicate 15-minute increments. Not perhaps the best watch for a crucial military operation, but perfect for folk who don’t need hyper-precision time readings… Looking at the press photos, the time indicated by the single white hand on the dial is 15:45.

The exhibition caseback displays the Sellita SW 330 automatic calibre controlling the slow movement of the single hand over 24 hours. Beating at 28,800vph, the movement delivers a power reserve of 56 hours thanks to the enhanced performance of the barrel.

The watch is paired with a cognac-coloured calfskin strap with crocodile embossing and white stitching. The MeisterSinger 24-Hour Edition is limited to 100 pieces and retails for EUR 3,190 (incl. tax). More information at Meistersinger.com.
