A celestial landscape with miniature painting, rare meteorites and an astronomical moon display.
Astronomy is part of Louis Moinet‘s history, who created the “compteur de tierces” chronograph specifically for celestial observations. The brand bearing his name has kept the connection alive through its multiple space-themed creations, such as the Super Moon and Mars Mission, the Space One Chronograph, the more recent Starman, and now, with the Moon Meteor, an elaborate creation combining miniature painting, genuine meteorite fragments and a moon phase indication. It presents a colourful celestial landscape by day and reveals a different composition when viewed in the dark.
The Moon Meteor’s 40.7mm polished and satin-finished case is crafted from grade 5 titanium. It features openworked lugs and a large fluted crown. Even with its pretty big 17.92mm height, the case weighs just 18 grams. A box-type sapphire crystal with double-sided anti-reflective treatment protects the dial, and the display caseback with engravings provides a view of the movement. Water resistance is 30m.
On the dial, a hand-painted miniature depicts a vivid celestial landscape, created under a binocular microscope using an extremely fine brush and successive layers of lacquer and varnish. Luminescent material is incorporated into the painting, allowing elements of the scene to emerge after dark. Time is indicated by faceted and skeletonised luminescent hands.
Three meteorite fragments cross the space: Martian meteorite NWA 13925, Jbilet Winselwan and Sahara 97093, an EH3-type enstatite meteorite containing microdiamonds of interstellar origin. The flange is made from Muonionalusta meteorite, displaying its characteristic Widmanstätten pattern. At the centre, a domed lunar disc recreates the Moon with engraved and hand-painted craters. Two lunar meteorites represent the full and new moon: Gadamis 005 and Dhofar 457. A hand-painted astronaut walking above the disc acts as the reference point for the lunar phase. The mechanism completes one lunar cycle with a claimed precision of just one day every 122 years.
The watch is powered by the Louis Moinet LM113, a self-winding movement developed with Concepto. It displays hours, minutes, and the lunar cycle, operates at 28,800 vibrations/hour and provides 48 hours of power reserve. The movement measures 30.4mm in diameter and 12.7mm thick.
The Moon Meteor is worn on a Louisiana alligator strap, closed with a triple-folding clasp featuring fine adjustment and the Louis Moinet fleur-de-lys. Limited to 12 pieces, each engraved “One of Twelve”, the watch combines astronomical mechanics with rare natural materials and miniature art in a distinctly contemporary Louis Moinet creation.
