Longines Spirit Green Collection

Introduced in mid-2020, the Longines Spirit collection was not only a highly important launch for the winged hourglass but also marked an entirely new line from the brand. Inspired by legendary aviators and explorers who rely on Longines watches and combining historical references with modern mechanics and contemporary codes, it is a more “mainstream” collection than the hardcore Heritage models, but still features multiple retro-inspired elements, as we’ve seen in our video review. Following the black, silver and blue inaugural versions, the brand enlarges the collection with the addition of the trendiest colour currently, green… Meet the new Longines Spirit Green Dial, available for the time-and-date models in 40mm and 42mm.

The Longines Spirit is a collection of classic, nicely executed pilots-inspired watches – a speciality of the brand – with old-school design cues, contemporary execution and higher-end features. It isn’t a hardcore re-edition as say, for instance, the Legend Diver or the Tuxedo Chronograph. The Spirit has been created and designed from scratch as a new collection, intended to bring classic pilots codes, yet in modern format and with modern technical solutions. The target isn’t the same as the Heritage models. It isn’t a niche watch for seasoned watch enthusiasts, but a collection for a broader audience who wants a daily-oriented model with a cool flair, yet with superior perceived quality and a capacity to resist modern life.

Available for now only on the time-and-date models, Longines brings a new dial colour to its Spirit collection… And knowing the current trend, it is not surprising to see green joining the classic black, silver and blue models. The main difference here concerns the colour, a relatively saturated tone of green, but also the finishing of the dial. While the black edition is matte, the blue is sunray-brushed and the silver is grained-argenté, this green edition has a sandblasted dial that brings a nice metallic sheen. Combines with the light beige colour of the Super-LumiNova, it brings an even more retro style to the collection.

While the colour and the finishing are new, the rest of the dial remains identical to other editions. As such, we find back the Arabic applied numerals – without a 3 for the 40mm model and with a partially cut 3 for the 42mm model – the sandblasted silver hands, applied logo and stars, as well as a raised minute track with its edge in polished metal. A date is positioned at 3 o’clock with a white background – its presence making the more mainstream vocation of this collection clear. A discreet touch of red is found on the tip of the luminous seconds hand.

For the rest, no evolutions are to be found. The case, in 40mm or 42mm, still features a very satisfying execution, with its combination of brushed surfaces and polished bevels. The case is topped by a domed sapphire crystal with AR coating, it features a screw-in crown and the water-resistance is rated at 100 metres. The caseback is closed and decorated with a decorative embossed emblem.

These new green Longines Spirit time-and-date are still powered by the brand’s exclusive calibre L888.4 (also known as ETA A31.L11). This self-winding movement comes with multiple interesting features, including its chronometer certification by COSC, an extended power reserve of 72 hours and an anti-magnetic silicon balance spring. Even though based on a known ETA base, it brings a clear competitive advantage to this collection.

As for the rest of the models, the Longines Spirit Green Dial models are available either on a beige leather strap closed by a pin buckle, or a 3-link stainless steel bracelet with triple folding clasp. Both are equipped with an interchangeability system, so no tool is needed to change from a strap to a bracelet.

These new Longines Spirit Green Dial models will be priced identically to the existing black, blue or silver editions. The 40mm editions will be priced at EUR 2,020, USD 2,150 or CHF 2,000 and the 42mm editions at EUR 2,120USD 2,250 or CHF 2,100 whether you choose a leather strap or a steel bracelet.

  1. Overall look is okay, but complete design failure of date window placement particularly in 42mm version. What were they thinking?
