The A. Lange & Söhne Triple Split is back in Platinum with a Rhodium-Coloured Dial

We’ve said it before: not all chronographs are created equal, and few extend the limits of mechanical short-time measurement as far as the A. Lange & Söhne Triple Split. Since its launch in 2018, this watch has occupied a unique position in modern watchmaking as the only split-seconds chronograph capable of measuring intermediate and comparative times not only in seconds or minutes but also over periods of up to 12 hours. Following the original white gold edition and the pink gold model (2021), Lange now presents a third version: a limited edition in 950 platinum, with a rhodium-coloured dial and contrasting grey subdials.

The platinum case of the new Lange & Söhne Triple Split measures 43.2mm in diameter and 15.6mm thick, dimensions largely dictated by the complexity of the movement and the need to keep its numerous indications reasonably legible. The case combines the usual Lange elegance with a decidedly technical appearance. The pusher at 2 o’clock is for starting and stopping the chronograph, at 4 o’clock for the flyback function, and at 10 for operating the rattrapante mechanism, which allows three rattrapante hands to be stopped simultaneously while the corresponding chronograph hands continue measuring.

The dial is made of 925 silver with a rhodié-coloured main surface and darker grey subdials. Despite the complexity of the display, the dial remains logically structured. In the centre, the chronograph and rattrapante seconds hands sit atop the hour and minutes hands. The counters are placed at 12, 4 and 8 o’clock. The 12 o’clock register displays the elapsed hours, the 4 o’clock counter the jumping elapsed minutes, with the subseconds at 8 o’clock. At 6 o’clock is the familiar Lange Ab/Auf power-reserve indication.

The rattrapante hands are rendered in blued steel. Red accents highlight parts of the hour and minutes counters and the power-reserve display. Rhodiumed hour and minute hands, and the markers at 3, 6, 9 and 12 o’clock, receive luminous treatment. The tachymeter scale runs along the dial’s periphery, on the flange. The main feature of the Triple Split is, naturally, its triple rattrapante mechanism. In a conventional split-seconds chronograph, two chronograph seconds hands can be separated to measure an intermediate or comparative time. Lange takes this principle considerably further by adding split hands for the elapsed minutes and hours too.

When the chronograph is started, the three blued rattrapante hands run in sync with their respective chronograph hands. Pressing the pusher at 10 o’clock stops all three rattrapante hands simultaneously, allowing an intermediate time to be read while the chronograph continues running. Press the pusher again, and the three hands catch up before continuing their measurement.

The watch is powered by the manually wound manufacture calibre L132.1, which comprises 567 components and is one of the most complex movements ever developed by A. Lange & Söhne. Its construction is characterised by remarkable depth, with levers, springs, wheels and switching mechanisms layered throughout the movement. As expected from Lange, the finishing is exceptional. Untreated German silver bridges feature Glashütte ribbing, while the levers and springs are straight-grained and bevelled. Five screwed gold chatons and the hand-engraved balance cock complete the picture. The movement runs at 21,600vph and delivers a power reserve of 55 hours.

The new A. Lange & Söhne Triple Split in Platinum is worn on a dark-brown, hand-stitched alligator leather strap with grey stitching and a quick-release platinum deployant buckle. The watch is a limited edition of 100 pieces, with an engraved edition number. It will be presented during the Concours of Elegance at Hampton Court Palace in early September 2026.
