The New Joker Fiat Lux by Konstantin Chaykin

The new Wristmon has a poker face that reveals too much, and it's good.

As an independent and highly talented watch and clockmaker and a member of the Académie Horlogère des Créateurs Indépendants (AHCI) since 2010, Konstantin Chaykin was already well-known in horological circles. However, his popularity soared with the introduction of his Joker and the Wristmons (Wrist Monsters) series in 2017. The original Joker, followed by releases like The Clown and Pumpkin Head, captivated audiences worldwide with their fun and original approach to serious watchmaking. Despite numerous Wristmons released over the years, their limited production numbers make them highly desirable and collectable. The latest addition, the Joker Fiat Lux by Konstantin Chaykin, features a fresh appearance with a partially skeletonised dial.

The new Joker Wristmon largely retains the technical specifications of the original Joker, housed in a 42mm stainless steel case with a poker-themed decorated bezel. It features crowns at 3 o’clock for setting the minutes and hours and 9 o’clock for adjusting the moon phase, whimsically displayed through a mouth-shaped aperture at the bottom of the dial. A notable new addition is the exhibition caseback, secured by six screws, replacing the solid casebacks of previous editions. Both the front and back sapphire crystals come with an anti-reflective coating.

“Fiat Lux” – a phrase that might sound ironic in the automotive industry context – translates from Latin to “let there be light,” a fitting name was chosen by Chaykin to emphasise the openworked design of his new creation. This Joker edition offers a fresh face that invites various interpretations, achieved through artistic skeletonisation. The dial features Clous de Paris guilloche motif decorations, silver plating, intricate coating, and multi-layered varnish application. Unlike previous editions, the eyes, usually a pair of rotating discs for the hour and minute indications, are hollow in this Joker Fiat Lux, revealing as much of the underlying mechanism as possible.

The movement powering the new Joker Fiat Lux is a modified ETA 2824-2 with a proprietary 84-part module known as the automatic K.07-0 calibre; no news here, yet it is attractively finished. It has a 38-hour power reserve and operates at a frequency of 28,800 vibrations/hour. The display caseback showcases the calibre, the real highlight is the rotor, which mirrors the wave-like skeletonised pattern found on the dial.

The Joker Fiat Lux is offered with a black alligator leather strap with green calfskin lining, closed with a pin buckle. It is a limited edition of 38 pieces, available exclusively through West Wood Time in the Chaoyang District, Beijing. Price upon request. For more details, visit chaykin.ru.
