The Unique Krayon Anywhere Created with Jean Todt
A Krayon Anywhere in platinum with a metiers d’art inspired by The Starry Night of Vincent van Gogh
Car guys are watch guys… The assertion may seem like a cliché but often stems from a genuine connection. Jean Todt, a towering figure in motorsport known for his tenure as CEO of Ferrari and his role as President of the FIA from 2009 to 2021, is no exception to the rule. He’s also known to be a passionate watch collector. This was evident when a collection of 111 of the timepieces he had gathered over the years went under the hammer at auction with Christie’s in 2022. This passion shines through the latest timepiece crafted by independent watchmaker Krayon. This unique piece Krayon Anywhere “for Jean Todt” features a métiers d’art dial inspired by Vincent van Gogh’s iconic masterpiece, The Starry Night.
Founded by Remi Maillat, independent watchmaking brand Krayon made a name for itself with the remarkable Everywhere model, the world’s first mechanical watch able to compute the sunrise and sunset times everywhere on the globe. This was succeeded by the slightly less intricate Anywhere, which remained faithful to the concept of showcasing sunrise and sunset times across the globe, albeit without the adjustability through the crown as seen in its predecessor.
This unique piece created with and for Jean Todt is an artistic expression of the concept. Presented in a 39.5mm platinum case, it houses a métiers d’art dial, a spectacular miniature enamel painting in various colours on the dial. With it, Van Gogh’s fascination with The Starry Sky coincides with the poetic, astronomical background of the unique complication imagined by Remi Maillat.
The central hands indicate the time. These are combined with a date and month display at the bottom (with the name JEAN TODT). Around the outer perimeter, the bi-colour rings represent the length of the day, with a travelling sun pointer providing a poetic touch of the time of day.
Flipping the watch over reveals a transparent case back, providing an unhindered view of the meticulously crafted hand-wound calibre C030. Operating at 3Hz with a power reserve of 86 hours (constrained by a stop work mechanism), this movement comprises an impressive 432 components. The mechanism responsible for adjusting the sunrise and sunset indications can be seen at the 6 o’clock position. Notably, the elongated central screw serves to adjust the latitude, while two adjustment screws on the bridges flanking the mechanism are employed to set the longitude – one for setting the sunrise and the other for the sunset. The calibre’s high-grade finishes include elegantly curvy waves, hand-polished angles both inward and outward, as well as polished recesses…
