Fourteen Years in the Making, this is the New and Sporty Zeitwinkel 240° Collection

A new family member with a new case size and a far sportier look.

| By Robin Nooy | 2 min read |

It was during Baselworld 2010 when Zeitwinkel co-founder Ivica ‘Maks’ Maksimovic suggested a concept for a sports watch to his fellow co-founders, Albert Edelmann and Peter Nikolaus. The two didn’t gravitate to the idea right away, but over time, and no doubt many discussions later, the idea was refined and distilled into something that could work for them all. That idea now comes alive in the all-new Zeitwinkel Model 240° collection, shrugging off the brand’s usual contemporary elegance for a rather sporty look, yet in the typical Zeitwinkel way.

The Zeitwinkel Model 240° NOIR and it’s black DLC-coated case.

Up until now, Zeitwinkel’s watches came in either 42.5mm or 39mm sized cases but the Model 240° introduces a new 40.5mm diameter and a 12.1mm height. That puts it neatly between the recently introduced MAKS collection and the excellent 273° Saphir Fumé. The grey PVD-coated or black DLC-coated case does, however, fall in line with the brand’s design ethos, with stout lines and straight angles. The dial and movement are sandwiched between sapphire crystals, and on the right side, there’s a screw-down crown flanked by a pair of guards for the first time. Yet the key element in the new Model 240° is its bezel, which has a minutes scale filled with Super-LumiNova, resulting in a much sportier look than anything else seen before.

While it’s designed to match the rest of the collections in style, the dial for the new Model 240° has a much sportier approach. It consists of several levels with various textures, from a raised minute track on the periphery to a grained section for the hour numerals and a sunray-grooved centre. The numerals themselves have a font that’s exclusive to Zeitwinkel and are finished with Super-LumiNova inserts. The sword-shaped hour and minute hands also have luminous inserts and are paired with a needle-like central seconds hand. The finishing touch on the dial is the printed logo and brand name, both in white.

Zeitwinkel has once more opted for its in-house calibre ZW0102, and why shouldn’t they? The movement, made with German Silver looks absolutely amazing and is impressively finished from top to bottom. But, to make it stand out a touch more, it’s been finished with ‘Black Or’ plates and bridges in the black DLC-coated Model 240° NOIR. In the ‘regular’ versions, it retains its untreated finish. The movement runs at a rate of 28,800vph and provides a steady 72 hours of running time.

Zeitwinkel puts the Model 240° on a dial-matching rubber strap stamped with the brand’s name, but other straps should also be an option, judging by the leather one seen in the images. It retails for CHF 15,900 in grey PVD-coated stainless steel or CHF 17,200 for the stealthier Model 240° NOIR in all-black. The collection is now available to order directly through the brand or its retail network.

  1. Like Zeitwinkel as a brand. The grey looks quite sharp, but I’d be concerned spending CHF 15,900, given the susceptibility of PVD finishes to scratching. Could a similar aesthetic have been achieved with tantalum, while keeping the price point under 20,000 CHF? (No.) I’m sure Zeitwinkel considered titanium as well.

  2. They want how much? for a PVD/DLC case, rubber strap and plastic printed dial, fixed bezel? I fully expected to see a $1799.00 asking price at the bottom.

  3. A bit of cursory research suggests I am wrong about the grey PVD in my first comment. The PVD finish should actually add to scratch resistance, so actually a pragmatic choice by Zeitwinkel. Unlike tantalum.
