The Vulcain Monopusher 39mm, a Cool 1950s Chronograph Reissue
It is a timeless classic in a smaller case and with a cool choice of dials.
Vulcain is a known player in the world of watches, and its Cricket series holds a special place in the brand’s history, earning titles such as “The Watch of Presidents” and the “World’s Best Watch for Busy People.” While these designations may have originated in the 1950s, they remain accurate even today. However, for the die-hard Vulcain enthusiasts, a diverse array of models deserve recognition. In sync with the current trend favouring vintage-inspired aesthetics in watchmaking, Vulcain, which has already re-issued one of its past chronographs recently, now brings back yet another retro-styled watch with the Vulcain Monopusher 39mm.
The new Vulcain Monopusher is presented in a nicely finished, classic-looking 39mm stainless steel step-case with a 13mm thickness. The case and bezel showcase a mirror-polished surface, while the lugs sport an elegant brushed finish. The fluted crown sits at 3 o’clock; at 2 o’clock, a single pusher manages all chronograph functions – start, stop, and reset. The screw-in solid caseback features the Vulcain logo. Topped with double-domed sapphire glass featuring AR coating, the case ensures a water resistance of 50m.
Vulcain introduces three distinct versions of the Monopusher, distinguished by their dial colours: a black variant with black counters and Khaki print, another with black and white counters and white print, and a salmon dial with black print; the latter two are limited editions of 50 pieces each. Lumed Arabic hour indices in Ivory or Khaki align with a minute track, creating a harmonious visual appeal. The symmetrical layout includes two slightly recessed subdials – a 30-minute chronograph register at 3 o’clock and a small seconds display opposite.
In line with the vintage inspiration, a pulsometer scale next to the hour track enables the wearer to gauge heart rates between 40 and 200 beats per minute. The leaf-style hour and minute hands in silver (for black and white dials) or rose-coloured (for salmon and all-black versions) ensure effortless readability. The small hands on the sub-dials echo this plating, enhancing the overall cohesion of the display.
Powering the Vulcain Monopusher 39mm is the manually wound Sellita SW510 M MP b movement, operating at 28,800vph and delivering a robust 58 hours of power reserve. The watches come with a range of leather strap options, all secured with a stainless steel pin buckle. All Vulcain Monopusher models are priced at EUR 2,950; as of the latest update, the salmon version is marked as sold out on the brand’s website, vulcain.ch.
