The New Union Glashütte Viro Chronograph Silvretta Classic 2023

There’s hardly a single motorsport event in the world that does not have a watch company as a sponsor or timekeeper. The Silvretta Classic, an annual vintage car rally that has taken place in the Austrian and Swiss Alps since 1998, for the third consecutive year, partners up with Union Glashütte to celebrate the beauty and diversity of automotive history. To mark the occasion and to continue the tradition started in 2021, the watchmaker releases a limited edition Viro Chronograph Silvretta Classic 2023 in a colour scheme evoking racing cars paint from the 1960s.

The new Union Glashütte Viro Chronograph Silvretta Classic 2023 is distinguished by the bright “Salzburg” red dial with three horizontal white stripes running in the middle. The 30-minute and 12-hour black chronograph counters positioned at 12 and 6 o’clock feature white dials with black rings; black is the tachymeter scale on the dial’s periphery. The small hand for the running seconds is almost invisible as it circles the subdial made of tiny 5-second increments markings, so all the attention goes to the chrono counters. White dots filled with Super-LumiNova serve as the hour markers. The Union logo and the day and date indication are executed in black on a white background, and together with the Super-LumiNova-treated nickel-black hands, these elements provide an eye-catching image, in contrast to other Union Glashütte Viro line timepieces the brand calls simple, reduced models – simple, yet confident.

Apart from the unique dial and the black leather racing-inspired strap, the Silvretta Classic 2023 is a typical Union Glashütte Viro chronograph, featuring a 44mm stainless steel case, 14mm in thickness, with a flat sapphire crystal and screwed exhibition caseback, 100m water-resistant. The mushroom-style pushers and the crown are pretty prominent; still, given the case dimensions, the watch does not look out of balance, but one must see how it fits the wrist. The Union Glashütte Viro Chronograph Silvretta Classic 2023 is driven by the UNG-14.01 automatic movement with 60 hours of power reserve. The chronograph mechanism is cam actuated, and the watch also features the stop-second device for accurate settings.

The new Union Glashütte Viro Silvretta Classic 2023 chronograph, apart from the perforated black leather strap, can be worn on a three-link stainless steel bracelet.
