A watch inspired by the 1970s Heuer-made, Abercrombie & Fitch branded Seafarer is a fantastic addition to the brand's current offer.
In the past, our friends at Hodinkee have collaborated with TAG Heuer to create exciting timepieces like the Carrera Skipper and Carrera Dato. This year, they present a fresh take on the iconic Abercrombie & Fitch Seafarer, which Heuer produced for the American retailer from the 1950s until the mid-1970s. We gladly present the new TAG Heuer Carrera Chronograph Seafarer x Hodinkee – this contemporary interpretation faithfully pays homage to the original reference 2444C, introduced shortly before the model was discontinued after two decades of experiments with cases and dials.
For the revival of the Seafarer, the 42mm Carrera “Glassbox” case was chosen, featuring a more durable and transparent domed sapphire crystal that mimics the profile of a vintage plexiglass crystal. The finely brushed and polished case has a display caseback, a signed fluted crown at 3 o’clock, and retro-styled chronograph pushers. At 9 o’clock, a rounded rectangular button marked with “tide” underscores the maritime-inspired nature of this 100m water-resistant timepiece.
The black opaline dial features a prominent minutes track segmented into 5-minute intervals, with numerals, at the periphery. The second’s track is one step closer to the centre, surrounded by applied, faceted baton-style hour indices for easy time reading, consistent with other TAG Heuer Carrera “Glassbox” models. The recessed subdials with silver rings indicate their functions: the “regatta” counter at 3 o’clock tracks chronograph minutes (up to 30), the subdial at 6 marked “Seafarer” shows the running seconds, and the sub-register at 9, with segments in white and two shades of blue, serves as the tide indicator.
The hands maintain the familiar Carrera shape, and Super-LumiNova is applied to both the hands and dial for legibility in the dark. The TAG Heuer Carrera logo adheres to the brand’s modern design codes, while the date window has been omitted with respect to the original reference.
The new TAG Heuer Carrera Chronograph Seafarer x Hodinkee is powered by the in-house TH20-13 Tide Indicator Chronograph Caliber, boasting an 80-hour power reserve. It comes with a black textured integrated rubber strap featuring a textile pattern. Priced at USD 7,950, the Carrera Chronograph Seafarer is a limited edition of 968 pieces.
