The New Porsche Design Chronograph 911 GT3 and 911 GT3 Touring
Porsche just released some updated versions of the 911 GT3 (992.2) and Porsche Design follows with dedicated watches.
It has become a classic pattern for Porsche Design. Porsche, the car brand, launches a new car and at the same time, PD presents its own vision of the matching timepiece, with the idea of having the perfect combination of vehicle and watch. Last week, Porsche (cars) released its latest editions of the 911 GT3 and 911 GT3 Touring, the most puristic models in its sports car lineup – and yes, despite all the regulations and EV-focused talks, it is still very much that naturally aspirated, 9K-revving nimble sports car we all love. And as expected, Porsche Design Presents its new Chronograph 911 GT3 and Chronograph 911 GT3 Touring watches to match.
Since its introduction 25 years ago with the 996 generation, the 911 GT3 has become the purist-oriented, track-focused model of the 911 range, bringing a motorsport-derived powertrain and exceptional driving dynamics to an already fantastic sports car. Following the launch of the 992.2 generation of 911, Porsche now presents its latest versions of the 911 GT3 and 911 GT3 Touring (wing or no wing, the choice is yours). Despite the ambient mood of electrification (by hybridisation or full EV), which has forced brands such as Ferrari, Lamborghini or McLaren to add electricity to their equations, Porsche has managed to retain its high-revving naturally aspirated engine alive, not without some efforts to make it comply with EU regulations. But let’s be happy about one thing; the 9,000rpm flat-6 engine is still there.
Following the brand’s usual pattern, Porsche Design now unveils two new models, the Chronograph 911 GT3 and 911 GT3 Touring, dedicated to future owners of the new Porsche 911 GT3 or 911 GT3 with Touring Package – and, yes, they will have the ability to customize these watches according to the specs of their car. Inspired by the concept of a “sports car on the wrist” and influenced by the design and motto of the 911 since its creation in 1972, Porsche Design here brings sporty, motorsport-oriented chronograph watches based on the classic Chronotimer Series 1 architecture, a watch that pays tribute to the earliest models created by the Butzi Porsche in the early 1970s, with a proprietary automatic flyback chronograph movement.
Made of lightweight titanium and is available in a glass-bead blasted version or with an optional matte black titanium carbide coating, these new Chronograph 911 GT3 and 911 GT3 Touring measure 42mm in diameter with a 15.3mm thickness. Sapphire crystals frame the watch, a titanium screw-down crown and pushers are located on the right side and the watch is 100m water-resistant. That’s where the classic features end, as these watches are all about matching the cars and online configurations. As such, besides the finishing of the case, the owner will be able to choose from a matte or black bezel, with either a pulsometer, tachymetric or minute scale.
These new Porsche Design Chronograph 911 GT3 models also introduce a new pattern, with a so-called GT dial with a hexagonal structure – again, reminiscent of lightweight materials used in motorsport. The same design can also be found on the instrument panel of the 911 GT3, if you opt for the Sport Chrono GT clock. The dial’s layout includes bold indices, a yellow ring and black rhodium-plated hour and minute hands with Super-LumiNova. The hands of the chronograph can be configured in the colours Performance (white), Essence (black) and GT (yellow). The seconds disc at the 9 o’clock position is marked with the lettering “911 GT3” and a chequered flag design. Finally, a customizable coloured ring around the dial is available in the various colours of the 911 GT3 and the Touring Package as well as in the colours of the “Paint to Sample” program.
Under the caseback and wound by a rim-shaped rotor (based on the respective design of the 911 GT3 or 911 GT3 Touring, with different colours available) is the COSC-certified Porsche Design WERK 01.200, a proprietary movement made with Sellita and equipped with a flyback function. This 7750-based calibre runs at 4Hz and stores 48 hours of power reserve. Owners of the 911 GT3 with Weissach Package or 911 GT3 Touring with Lightweight Package can also select the exclusive 911 GT3 Weissach Rotor.
The final customization option is the strap, which is made from original Porsche vehicle leather and yarn and can be designed to match the individual configuration of the vehicle interior. It is closed by a titanium folding clasp, with quick-change mechanism. An optional titanium bracelet (glass bead blasted or with black titanium carbide coating) is also available.
The Porsche Design Chronograph 911 GT3 and the Chronograph 911 GT3 Touring will be available to order from the end of the year, starting from EUR 10,250, in Porsche centres and Porsche Design Stores worldwide exclusively for buyers of the new Porsche 911 GT3 or 911 GT3 with Touring Package.
