The More Compact 39mm Alpina Alpiner Extreme Automatic

Something good just got better...

| By Rebecca Doulton | 2 min read |

Alpina specialises in sports watches, and its Alpiner Extreme models in heavy-duty 41mm stainless steel cases are designed to withstand the toughest conditions. Revamped in 2022, the Alpiner Extreme started its new lease of life with a regulator dial and expanded to include regular time-and-date models and a chronograph. However, less than a month ago, Alpina trialled an openworked Alpiner Extreme Skeleton in a smaller 39mm case size, a teaser of sorts, leading to the three new closed dial references of the Alpiner Extreme Automatic. With their more compact and on-trend 39mm diameter, Alpina opens a window to a wider range of wrist sizes.

The three new Alpiner Extreme Automatic references have a diameter of 39mm, a length of 40.5mm and a height of 11.5mm. The bold, 200m water-resistant case, with its squarish base with rounded edges, is surmounted by a round bezel with six exposed screws bearing Alpina’s triangles. The dynamic finishes accentuate the architecture with a pronounced vertical brush on the bezel and lugs, a circular brush on the case and brightly polished bevels, screws and lateral bumpers for contrast. The screw-down crown is also polished and has a rubber grip matching the dial colour.

Speaking of which, there are three dial colours in the new 39mm format: traditional blue and dark green and a rather attractive new beige dial that might well be the winning model. Moreover, the beige dial is the only one (so far) that can be acquired on an integrated steel bracelet or an interchangeable beige rubber strap; the black and blue are available exclusively on steel bracelets.

The dials display the signature embossed triangle pattern with applied silver-coloured and hand-polished indices and a date window at 3 o’clock. The indices and the hour and minute hands are luminescent, and the central seconds hand has a red triangular counterweight.

No surprises on the movement front since these more compact 39mm versions are fitted with the same AL-525 automatic (base Sellita SW200) as their bigger brother, beating at 28,800vph, with a relatively modest power reserve of 38 hours and a bespoke black asymmetrical rotor.

The Alpiner Extreme Automatic with an integrated steel bracelet retails for EUR 1,995; the beige dial with the rubber strap for EUR 1,695. More information at alpinawatches.com.
