Mido’s flagship Ocean Star collection is a contemporary evolution of its 1940s Ocean Star dive watch family. Often described as an all-round ‘surf and turf’ model, the Ocean Star 200C, introduced in 2021, comes with upgraded features like ceramic inserts and textured, colourful dials and Swatch Group’s latest-generation calibre 80. The new Ocean Star 200C member joining the family comes with an eye-catching colour scheme and all the traction you would expect from a high-performance 200m water-resistant sports watch.

Thanks to its Aquadura cork crown sealing system from the 1930s, Mido became a pioneer in the production of watertight cases. The Ocean Star family, with its starfish logo, was born in the early 1940s and today is home to a variety of dive watches, like the retro Decompression Timer and Ocean Star Tribute, a professional 600m water-resistant variant and the Ocean Star 200C contemporary line of dive watches (200C stands for the case’s 200m depth rating and the “C” for ceramic).

Inspired by the colours of dusk as the sun slowly sinks into the horizon, the new Ocean Star 200C combines a black dial with rippling waves in relief with a red ceramic bezel. An essential feature of a dive watch, the knurled unidirectional rotating bezel is fitted with a resilient, scratch-resistant, high-tech ceramic ring with bold white markings to measure elapsed times, and a luminescent Super-LumiNova dot at noon. The hands and applied round indices are profiled in a rose gold PVD treatment for an extra touch of refinement and treated with white Super-LumiNova. Designed for all terrains, the dial features a day and date window with a white background and black numerals.

The robust 42.5mm stainless steel case with a height of 12.3mm is fitted with a screw-down crown flanked by guards and a screwed caseback. Brushed finishes underscore the watch’s sporty credentials, while the signature starfish on the caseback in relief is polished. Hidden beneath the solid steel caseback, the Ocean Star 200C is powered by the Mido calibre 80 based on the ETA C07.621. Shared by some of the most accessible brands in Swatch Group, the Powermatic 80 is an evolution of the 2824 architecture with a lower frequency of 3Hz, an improved power reserve of 80 hours and a Nivachron magnetic-resistant balance spring.

The watch is paired with a brown leather strap with white stitching and a steel pin buckle; there are lug bars for quick changes. The watch joins the permanent collection and retails for CHF 990 (incl. tax).

  1. Gifted this model to my best friend. Letters DO of MIDO fell off the dial after 3 years.
