Jacob & Co. Updates its Bold Oil Pump Tourbillon Watch
A modernized, more compact version of Jacob’s miniature recreation of an oil rig
Forget conservative, low-key luxury with Jacob & Co. The brand’s timepieces are extravagant and spectacular creations that push the boundaries. While the design of his statement pieces may divide opinions, there’s no denying that Jacob brings a unique and captivating essence to the industry. Introduced in 2019, the Oil Pump watch blends precision with entertainment, bringing to life an oil extraction scene on the wrist of oil magnates. At Geneva Watch Days 2024, Jacob unveils a modernized, more compact version of the model. Despite the update, the watch still retains its distinctive oil pump automaton and it is now regulated by a single-axis tourbillon.
The new iteration of the Oil Pump features a 44mm x 18mm rose gold case, a significant reduction from the previous version’s 49.5mm x 20mm size. Displayed over a black honeycomb pattern grid, the intricate automaton includes two gold-plated derricks, a network of gold pipes, a gold oil gauge indicating the power reserve and a gold reservoir tank. The hours and minutes are displayed at 4 o’clock, coaxially with the one-minute tourbillon. Winding the movement and setting the time is achieved through flip-up bows at the back of the case.
Blending precision with entertainment, the oil pump automaton can be activated on demand with a pusher at 1h30, creating a captivating 35-second animation. The hand-wound JCAM53 movement, comprising 450 parts and equipped with 55 jewels, operates at 21,600vph and boasts a 72-hour power reserve. Notably smaller than its predecessor, the JCAM33 movement, this new iteration is regulated by a single-axis flying tourbillon (instead of a double-axis tourbillon that obviously requires more space for its rotations on different planes).
The Jacob & Co. Oil Pump comes with a black alligator strap and 18k rose gold / titanium folding clasp. It is released in a limited edition of 99 pieces. Price is set at USD 280,000.
