If watches tick discrete seconds, time is continuous. It flows. Literally. Reading time on an HYT watch is an original experience. Its watches propose an artistic, symbolic and somehow natural representation of the relentless nature of time. Death and the image of the skull are, in this context, not just a gimmick. It makes sense and is the reason why HYT’s watches have long been emblazoned with skulls. The latest skull model in this collection has just been presented; meet the new HYT Soonow.
HYT watches are powered by mechanical movements that propel fluid into a capillary to portray time in a linear fashion. This capillary contains two contrasting liquids working in opposition. When the meniscus separating the liquids gets to 6 pm, it flows back to its original position.
If Soonow is not HYT’s first skull watch, this new take on the theme ventures down a modern artistic path. With its original design language and unique way to portray time, this “memento mori” is a reminder that we should try and live life to the full. And enjoy every moment. It reminds us to celebrate and embrace life. The watch does not display minutes. The liquids flowing in the skull-shaped capillary (bent into a new shape) simply provide an indication of the time. The watch crystal features hour indications – these as well as the logo are set within the material. The numerals are printed in letters at the periphery of the skull.
Just for all H0 models, the new HYT Soonow features a sculptural sapphire dome. Sleek and highly graphic, this three-dimensional object offers different angles and perspectives on the watch. It is also a tactile experience with its soft lines, smooth curves and transitions. Under this transparent dome, the “dial” is a spectacular 3D representation of a skull. A perforated titanium plate is fitted with over 300 gold pins to create a modern and artistic representation of the face of death. The left eye of the watch shows running seconds, with the words soon and now printed in red passing alternatively every 30 seconds. The right eye shows the power reserve with a “dead or alive” display.
At 48.8mm in diameter, the case is presented in steel or DLC-coated steel. Each version is released as a limited edition of 25 pieces, with blue or green fluidic hours respectively. Interestingly, the liquids have been inverted as the transparent liquid represents elapsed time.
Turn the watch over and the exhibition caseback provides clear evidence of the complexity of the mechanical movement powering the fluidic module. It is the inaugural movement developed with Chronode ticking at 4Hz and boasting 65 hours of power reserve. The bridges are hand-bevelled and decorated with Geneva stripes.
