The New Grand Seiko SBGY043 Iwao Blue
A fine Spring Drive dress watch in deep indigo, with a sport-chic twist.
The Grand Seiko Elegance Collection is home to some of the brand’s most restrained and poetic creations. Models such as the Omiwatari, Karasawa, and other hand-wound Spring Drive references demonstrate how minimalism, texture, and mechanical refinement can coexist. The new SBGY043 Iwao Blue keeps the successful, elegant formula that made earlier editions so attractive and adds a slightly more contemporary, sport-chic angle with the multi-link bracelet.
The stainless steel case measures 38.5mm in diameter and 10.2mm thick, maintaining the proportions typical of this family. Its design is softer and more curved than most Grand Seiko cases. Zaratsu polishing alternates with brushed surfaces, and the dual-curved sapphire crystal adds depth and distortion to the dial, enhancing its texture.
The dial of the new SBGY043 Iwao Blue is rendered in a deep indigo hue, known as Katsuiro, which historically symbolises victory and was once used for samurai armour. Here, it is paired with the textured “Iwao” pattern, meaning rock, so the dial feels organic and structured, with subtle engraved relief catching the light. Diamond-cut applied hour markers and sharply faceted dauphine hands reflect light with precision, completing the composition. The layout is intentionally clean, with no date display. The absence of additional indications keeps the focus on the texture and colour, which are the true highlights of every Grand Seiko Elegance watch.
The SBGY043 relies on the familiar manual-wound Spring Drive calibre 9R31, a movement with a dual spring barrel architecture, delivering a 72-hour power reserve. Accuracy is rated at ±1 second per day, thanks to Grand Seiko’s proprietary Spring Drive regulation system. Visible through the sapphire caseback, the movement, with a refined finish, features a power-reserve indicator and heat-blued screws.
The nine-link brushed and polished stainless steel bracelet is a departure from the Elegance Collection leather straps (except for the few GMT references on a three-link bracelet and the Omiwatari SBGY013, which was also released on a nine-link steel bracelet in 2022). Small links provide comfort and flexibility, and paired with a bracelet, this Grand Seiko can be both a formal dress and an everyday watch. Available exclusively at Grand Seiko boutiques from June 2026, the SBGY043 is priced at EUR 10,000.
