As the leading watchmaker of his day, Abraham-Louis Breguet enjoyed the patronage of France’s royalty and aristocracy. Among the names on his A-list was Napoleon Bonaparte’s youngest sister, Caroline Murat, also known as the Queen of Naples. A keen collector of Breguet’s timepieces, one of the 30 pieces she commissioned from Breguet was a watch that could be attached to the wrist. Delivered to the Queen of Naples in 1812, Breguet’s oblong creation was fitted with a quarter repeater, a moon phase indicator and a thermometer attached to the wrist via a wristlet of hair woven with gold thread. Almost two centuries later, in 2002, Breguet launched its Reine de Naples women’s collection with distinctive oval-shaped cases. The latest Reine de Naples 8918, launched to celebrate International Women’s Day, is a delightful white gold model with a sprinkling of diamonds and a refreshing mint-green colour scheme.

Measuring 36.5 x 28.54mm with a height of 10.1mm, the elegant 18k white gold case features the hallmark fluted caseband of all Breguet watches. Attracting light to its oval-shaped contours, the bezel and interior flange are set with 117 brilliant-cut diamonds, while the off-centred crown at 4 o’clock sparkles with a briolette-cut diamond.

The new pastel palette blends a soft white mother-of-pearl dial with transferred mint-green Breguet-style numerals. In the centre of the dial is a snow-set diamond circle surrounded by a minutes track with symbols used by Breguet on his pocket watches; the hours and minutes are indicated by signature Breguet open-tipped hands. A large pear-shaped diamond gleams at 6 o’clock and the watch’s unique number is displayed between 11 and 12 o’clock.

Equipped with the in-house calibre 537, the automatic movement has a power reserve of 45 hours and oscillates at 3.5Hz. A sapphire crystal on the caseback reveals the round movement, complete with a Breguet balance wheel and a contemporary silicon balance spring. The Reine de Naples 8918 is presented on a matching mint-green alligator strap with a triple-folding buckle set with 28 diamonds. It retails for CHF 45,900 / EUR 53,800.
