The new Carbon Edition of the Hublot Big Bang Tourbillon SR_A by Samuel Ross

The sculptural, aerodynamic take on Hublot's Big Bang by Samuel Ross is back lighter than ever.

Artist and designer Samuel Ross is back at work with Hublot. A tradition for the brand over its 44 years of existence, Hublot has collaborated with many contemporary artists like Richard Orlinski, Maxime-Plescia-Buchi, Murakami and Daniel Arsham. Marking the third time the Swiss brand has worked with Samuel Ross, both parties bring back the bold, sculptural and lightweight Big Bang Tourbillon SR_A in a new colour scheme and with a carbon fibre case.

In 2020, to celebrate the watchmaker’s 40th anniversary, the artist unveiled the REFORM sculpture, which inspired the design of the Big Bang Tourbillon Samuel Ross, the first collaboration between Samuel Ross and Hublot on a timepiece. Having worked together on two occasions, resulting in orange and green editions of what’s one of the boldest watches of Hublot, Samuel Ross and the watch brand now launch a new chromatic variation based around the colour blue, incorporating new materials, specifically carbon.

One of the main elements of the Samuel Ross x Hublot Big Bang Tourbillon watches has always been the highly complex case, which is more than just a shape but also an intricate architecture. Retaining its 44mm diameter and 13.75mm thickness, it is a watch with a strong visual presence, a feeling reinforced by its unique shape. It features a honeycomb pattern theme all around, with hollowed hexagonal elements inside the lugs and on the flanks. The sides of the case, as well as the intermediate plate under the bezel, are now made of frosted grey carbon. All other elements of the case retain their titanium construction, with satin finishes and shiny microblasted surfaces.

Besides the addition of carbon, this year’s theme for this Big Bang Tourbillon Carbon SR_A is blue. In addition to being used on the crown and strap, this colour also adorns the dial with its striking latticework of hexagonal perforations. The number six comes again into play with the six circular and luminous hour markers positioned above the movement under a transparent sapphire chapter ring, three of them coloured in blue. This transparency also lets you see what’s underneath: a tourbillon movement with a 60-second regulator suspended at 6 o’clock and the Hublot-branded micro-rotor at noon.

The backside, which you can see here, reveals the honeycomb-perforated plate of the in-house calibre HUB6035. This automatic movement comprises 282 components and stores 72 hours of power reserve. It’s certainly more impressive from the dial side than from the back.

Delivered with two rubber straps (black and blue), which can be changed thanks to a quick-release system, and featuring the same honeycomb motif as the case and a redesigned titanium folding clasp, the Hublot Big Bang Tourbillon Carbon SR_A by Samuel Ross is a limited edition of 50 pieces, retailing for CHF 130,000, EUR 149,000 or USD 143,000.
