Hanhart 417 ES Moby Dick 39mm
The civil chronograph, returned to its original proportions.
Hanhart’s history is tied to pilots’ chronographs, and the so-called “Moby Dick” occupies a special place in the brand’s story. Most vintage 417 chronographs came with dark dials, but a very small number were produced with white dials for civilian use. Over time, fans adopted the nickname “Moby Dick” because of their appearance and rarity. Though the designation was never official, Hanhart has since adopted the name. With the new 417 ES Moby Dick 39 mm, the brand delivers one of its most requested releases: a white-dial version of the historic 417 ES chronograph in its original, compact size, which now comes next to the already existing 42mm edition.

The new 417 ES Moby Dick 39 mm comes in the model’s classic stainless steel case, and measures 39mm in diameter, 13.6mm thick, including the domed sapphire crystal, and 46mm lug-to-lug. The proportions closely mirror the original vintage watch, making this version notably more compact and wearable than the larger 42mm reissues. The signature fluted bezel rotates continuously in both directions (no clicks). Instead of the signature red marker, Hanhart fits an ivory-coloured Super-LumiNova insert, matched to the dial and hands. A convex sapphire crystal with internal anti-reflective coating recreates the look of the original Plexiglas while improving durability. A soft-iron inner case protects the movement against magnetic fields up to 16,000 A/m. Water resistance is 100m.
The white dial is clean and legible, featuring period-correct typography, a bi-compax layout, and the historical Hanhart logo. Ivory-toned Arabic numerals and hands are filled with Super-LumiNova Light Old Radium. The steel hands are thermally blued.

The new 417 ES Moby Dick 39 mm is powered by the Sellita SW510 M hand-wound chronograph movement, an alternative to the ETA 7750. Beating at 28,800 vibrations/hour and offering a power reserve of at least 58 hours, it features hacking seconds and a classic cam-lever chronograph construction. Each movement is regulated in-house at Hanhart’s Gütenbach manufacture to strict tolerances of 0 to +8 seconds per day, with no negative deviation allowed in the main positions.
The 417 ES Moby Dick 39 mm is worn on a calfskin leather strap (light brown, black, or dark brown) or on a stainless steel bracelet with a folding clasp. The price is EUR 2,290 for a leather strap and EUR 2,490 for a stainless steel bracelet. For more, visit hanhart.com.
