The Hamilton Khaki Navy Scuba 40mm, now with a Cool Red Bezel
An accessible, well-equipped aquatic watch that now gets a dash of colour.
While widely known for its countless apparitions on the silver screen and its military-inspired watches, Hamilton, once an American brand now under the umbrella of the Swatch Group, also carries a rather serious range of aquatic-oriented watches. Sitting alongside the high-performance Frogman and BeLOWZERO collections is the Khaki Navy Scuba, a classic dive watch with an accessible price. In particular, the Auto 40mm collection that we’ve seen already in bold, summer-oriented colours, is now back in a new (and somehow famous…) combination of black dial and red bezel.
As we explained in our previous article regarding this mid-size edition, the Khaki Navy Scuba 40mm isn’t per se a proper dive watch, but more of a sporty watch with an aquatic vibe. The reason for that is its 100m water-resistance, which on paper is sufficient even to pass the ISO 6425 standard, but might feel a bit short for some – even though, in reality, it will be more than robust enough for 99% of us. This consideration aside, the Hamilton Khaki Navy Scub is a nice watch, with a classic design and basically all you need in such a model.
The case, which is made of mostly brushed steel with some polished accents, measures a very decent 40mm diameter with a thickness of 12.95mm – it could be better, but it’s still fairly comfortable. The dial is protected by a sapphire crystal with an anti-reflective coating, the crown is well protected by lateral guards and screws down and the caseback, which is in solid steel, is screwed to the case. Considering the price and the vocation, it’s all you’ll ever need.
What’s new for this edition of the Khaki Navy Scuba 40mm is the bezel. The aluminium insert is here presented in red, contrasting with the black dial – some will immediately make the connection with another famous dive watch, except that here, the colour is much brighter. The unidirectional bezel has a standard 60-minute scale and the dial, with large applied markers, features a comfortable amount of luminous material. The inner 13-24 hour scale reminds of the brand’s military past and the date window at 4:30 adds a daily vocation, but isn’t the most elegant.
Inside the case, no surprises as we have the Calibre H-10, Hamilton’s name for the Powermatic 80. This evolution of the ETA 2824 is equipped with an anti-magnetic Nivachron balance spring and boasts a generous power reserve of 80 hours. The watch is worn on a solid and well-built 3-link steel bracelet with a folding clasp.
Now available from the brand and part of the permanent collection, the Hamilton Khaki Navy Scuba 40mm Red Bezel is attractively priced at EUR 895, CHF 795 or USD 845. For more details, please visit www.hamiltonwatch.com.
