Hamilton has a long tradition of crafting military watches. The brand became a contractor of the American army in the early 20th century. Inspired by this rich heritage, the Khaki Field Collection comprises rugged, functional, “go-anywhere, do-anything” watches, such as the Hacked Re-Edition or this very cool chronograph. The newest members of the Khaki Field collection are adventure-ready timepieces equipped with a compass to guide you to the most remote destinations in the wild. As its name suggests, the Hamilton Khaki Field is a quintessential field watch. As such, it is a no-nonsense functional wristwatch designed with reliability, robustness, simplicity and legibility in mind. With the new Hamilton Khaki Field Expedition, the collection is evolving into an adventure-themed outdoor watch. No matter if you plan to actually use it or if you just like the look, the specificity of this Khaki Field is its compass bezel. Marked with the cardinal points, the bi-directional rotating ring will help you navigate your adventure with the help of the Sun. To determine the approximate compass positions, you simply need to set the hour hand in the direction of the Sun and then set the South “S” to halfway between the 12 o’clock position and the hour hand – This applies in the Northern hemisphere and in normal time, not Daylight Savings time.
The Khaki Field Expedition is offered in two dimensions to fit different wrist sizes and tastes, and the well-proportioned and rugged case is available either in 37mm or 41mm diameters. Made of brushed stainless steel, it features a screw-down crown and a screw-down caseback, and the water-resistance rating is 100m. Available in black, white or blue, the dial focuses on the essentials with hours, minutes and seconds indication (with no date). The hands and the hour markers are enhanced with Super-LumiNova for optimal legibility in all conditions.
Inside the Khaki Field Expedition is the calibre Hamilton H-10. This automatic movement is Hamilton’s version of Swatch group’s Powermatic 80, the upgraded version of the ETA 2824. The movement architecture is similar to that of the tried-and-tested workhorse, but it comes with a longer 80-hour power reserve thanks to a reworked kinetic chain and a 3Hz frequency. The hairspring is made in Nivachron to minimise the effects of magnetism. The movement is visible via the exhibition caseback. The rotor is openworked. The decoration is relatively simple, which is to be expected at this price point.
The model is available in four versions for each case size. The black dial is available on a leather strap or on a three-link steel bracelet. The white and blue dials are available on leather straps. All in all, the Hamilton Khaki Field Expedition is a great adventure watch with enough style to wear every day. It feels well-built and functional, and its classic design makes for a perfect daily wearer. The screw-down crown and glareproof sapphire crystal, which are not common features of the Khaki Field collection, are welcome additions. As often with Hamilton, it offers very good value for the money, given its features and its movement. The price will be EUR 1,115 or CHF 970 on a leather strap, and EUR 1,195 or CHF 1,050 on a steel bracelet.
