The De Rijke & Co. Amalfi Enamel Series Made with Illustrator Guy Allen

Land, Sea and Air... In any case, you'll have one cool drivers watch with rotating case.

One of the rising stars of the young Dutch independent watchmaking scene, De Rijke & Co. Watches, founded by Laurens De Rijke, started as a fun project during a… vintage Vespa moped road trip through eastern Europe. From there, what was a side project turned into a more prolific indie watch brand with always a signature rotating case, making the original Amalfi Series a great driver’s watch. Following the rather successful Miffy Moonphase series, the man is back with a set of three limited edition Amalfi watches featuring original, pictorial enamel dials.

Six years in the making (sort of…) This new series of De Rijke & Co. Amalfi models still retains the classic rotatable case design and several aspects that made the original models popular but also brings several clever updates to the lot. What’s notable here, is the fact that the trio here is the result of a collaboration with renowned illustrator Guy Allen, who was commissioned back in 2018 by De Rijke to create illustrations to promote the Amalfi Series 1. This long-term partnership led to the creation of dial designs, which have been rendered in enamel.

Three themes have been elected; Land, in red, with the effortless elegance of 1950s Italian GT; Air, in blue, with a Macchi Castoldi M.C 72 Seaplane; Sea, in sea-green, with a timeless wooden hulled speedboat. These dials are made using the traditional champlevé technique, with solid 925 silver dials etched and then filled with grand feu enamel by hand and fired at high temperature. The enamelling process is done by an experienced craftsman in the UK. The theme of each limited edition (Land, Sea and Air) is then repeated on the caseback with a dedicated engraving.

For the rest, these Amalfi Enamel Series are both classic De Rijke but also bring updates. The two-part steel case still measures 38.2mm x 11mm and mostly retains its capacity to rotate 90 degrees, to transform the watch so the display will face its owner correctly while driving. Compared to the inaugural models, there’s now a sapphire crystal and the lugs have been modified to a classic design, in order to be able to change the strap (no more loop-like lugs).

Inside the case, Laurens De Rijke relies on a simple but proven Sellita SW300 automatic high-grade, with 4Hz frequency and 42h power reserve. Each watch is worn on a different strap to match the dial colour, all equipped with quick-release spring bars and a steel pin buckle.

Limited to 25 pieces per design, the De Rijke & Co. Amalfi Enamel Series will be available from the brand and its retailers at EUR 3,395 (excl. taxes). For more details, please consult derijkeandco.com.
