The New Cimier 47° North Collection, a Fun and Accessible Field Watch
Functional, reliable, designed for everyday use, and with a colourful twist.
Like so many brands, Cimier faced challenges during the quartz revolution but re-emerged in 2003. Celebrating its 100th Anniversary in 2024, the brand launched the 711 Heritage Chronograph, and the recent colourful POP editions reintroduced the name to a new audience, offering affordable, well-built mechanical watches. In 2025, Cimier builds on that momentum with the launch of the 47° North collection, a compact field watch inspired by the brand’s roots and the rugged geography surrounding its home in Biel/Bienne, situated at 47 degrees north latitude.
For over a century, Cimier worked the accessible side of Swiss watchmaking. Founded in 1924 by Joseph Lapanouse in Hölstein, the brand began as a manufacturer of robust pin-pallet escapement watches. Through the mid-20th century, Cimier continued its inventive yet practical approach, exemplified by the 1960s Cimier Sport, the first industrially produced pin-pallet chronograph with a simplified construction; its affordability made it a massive success, with over 20 million calibres produced.
The Cimier 47° North, a collection of five different watches, is presented in a 316L stainless-steel case measuring 38mm in diameter, 46mm lug-to-lug, and 11.25mm in thickness – a.k.a Goldilocks dimensions for a modern, time-and-date field watch. Polished chamfers accent its brushed surfaces. A box-shaped sapphire crystal with internal anti-reflective coating ensures legibility; a screw-down crown and screwed sapphire exhibition caseback provide a solid 100m of water resistance.
The domed, grained dial combines simplicity with functional clarity. Large Arabic numerals and a railroad-style minute track are printed in contrasting tones for maximum readability, with Super-LumiNova GL old radium on the numerals and hands. The bright orange central seconds hand, featuring a rectangular luminous block, adds contrast and character.
Reflecting Cimier’s recent move toward bolder colour expression seen in the POP collection, the 47° North series offers five dial variations: black, white, gradient pebble grey, moss green, and river blue. Each colourway gives the compact field watch its own personality, ranging from classic to casual, and even seriously fun for the blue and green versions.
The series is powered by the automatic ETA 2824-2, a proven calibre known for its reliability and ease of service. The movement runs at 28,800 vibrations/hour and provides a 38-hour power reserve with a stop-seconds mechanism for precise setting. The finishing includes rhodium plating, Geneva stripes, blued screws, and a custom Cimier rotor with the brand’s signature orange cut-out.
Strap options include smooth calf leather in black or cognac, or suede calf leather in pebble grey, moss green, or river blue, each colour coordinated with the dial, closed with a pin buckle.
Immediately available from the brand’s website, and priced at CHF 850 (excluding taxes), the Cimier 47° North is a permanent addition to the brand’s growing mechanical range. And one that comes with a great quality/price ratio, as well as a nice design. For more information and orders, visit cimier.com.
