Refreshing Elegance, with Five Very Stylish Dress Watches

Compact and elegant watches can be timeless for a reason. It’s almost always a case of less is more, or offering something uniquely creative without overdoing it. Naturally, most people’s first thought will go to icons such as the Cartier Tank or the Patek Philippe Calatrava. Still, with the recent resurgence in the popularity of dress watches, there are plenty of intriguing new entries to be found a little bit off the beaten path as well, each offering something different. So with that in mind, here are five surprisingly elegant watches available today, ranging from emerging independents to mainstream brands.

Laps Arche

When we first saw the Arche by French design studio Laps, we were quite surprised by its subtle originality. While at first it looks like a fairly conventional time-date watch, it offers something playfully unique. Each hour marker has a slightly different shape, creating a sense of depth and three-dimensionality we’ve rarely seen in watches. The hands also have a distinct shape, with the running seconds represented by a faceted cap. At 37.5mm by 9.8mm, the Arche’s proportions are spot on, the Miyota 9015 automatic is reliable, and it looks pretty darn sweet all around! It’s also priced very modestly, at only EUR 860, including VAT.

De Rijke & Co. Capri

De Rijke & Co made a huge name for itself with the Miffy Moonphase, based on its original concept of the Amalfi’s rotatable case. The follow-up Capri takes a rather different direction, as it serves up an original take on the classic Tank-style dress watch. The sloped edges of the case, the wrap-around sapphire crystal, the dial that follows the same curvature and the lack of visible fasteners or screws give it tons of personality. It comes in two configurations, all powered by a La Joux-Perret D100 or D101 manually wound movement. Worn on an integrated tapered leather strap, only 50 pieces per dial are made (Black Onyx is sold out already). The price is EUR 2,195 (excl. VAT)

Gerald Genta Geneva Time-Only

The Gerald Genta Geneva Time-Only stands out for its rather original shape, although it seems like ‘just’ another cushion-shaped watch at first glance. Look closer though, and you discover more and more details. One of the most striking elements is the shape of the minute track, with the outside line following the profile of the crystal and case. The applied markers and grained texture further elevate its character, and around the back you’re greeted by the calibre GG-005P, which is based on the Zenith Elite 670 automatic. Available in white or rose gold and worn on a leather strap that attaches to a single central lug, it retails for EUR 25,000.

Mermont La Parfaite

Time is essential in life, but that doesn’t mean life needs to be measured in hours, minutes and seconds at every moment. If anything, it’s rather rewarding to take a step back every now and then and let loose a little, which is when the Mermont La Parfaite comes in. This single-handed watch is riddled with details, from the platinum case with a tantalum caseback to the colimaçon sunburst-brushed dial and the slightly slanted railroad-style minute track and Breguet numerals. But the best part is that sculpted three-dimensional hand running over the dial. It uses a La Joux-Perret D101 regulated by Nicolas Delaloye, is limited to 28 pieces produced over two years, and costs CHF 10,998 excl. VAT.

Completing the list is Grand Seiko’s dashing Evolution 9 Spring Drive U.F.A. SLGB006 “Ice Forrest at Dawn”, which comes in a compact yellow gold case measuring 37mm across with a height of 11.4mm. The dial is yet another standout feature, with a jet-black gradient finish, embedded with sparkling yellow gold particles. The applied hour markers, hands and date frame are also matched to the case, and around the back you can see the calibre 9RB2. This Spring Drive quartz-automatic hybrid movement is regulated to U.F.A. standards, with a remarkable accuracy of ±20 seconds per year! Limited to 80 pieces, it retails for EUR 44,700.
