Baume & Mercier Gives the Clifton an Ice-Blue Update (Incl. Video)

The Clifton collection was introduced in 2012 and has since become the more classically styled part of Baume & Mercier‘s catalogue, drawing on the design of 1950s watches. In 2018, with the arrival of the Baumatic movement, the series was improved mechanically. Following a substantial redesign in 2025, which introduced more compact proportions, elongated trapezoidal indexes, alpha hands and a three-row bracelet, the Clifton returned in two limited editions with a new ice-blue guilloché-styled dial. One is a 39mm Automatic with date, and the other brings the Baumatic movement and a perpetual calendar to a 40mm stainless-steel watch.

Clifton Baumatic 39mm

The most straightforward of the two watches follows the proportions established with last year’s redesign, when the watch moved away from its 40mm case. The updated stainless-steel case measures 39mm in diameter and 11.22mm thick, with polished and satin-finished surfaces, topped by a domed sapphire crystal treated with an anti-reflective coating on both sides. The low-profile, semi-recessed crown follows the case’s rounded shape. A four-screw sapphire caseback reveals the movement and carries a special “Limited Edition” engraving that can also be personalised.

The ice-blue guilloché-inspired dial, obtained by a stamping process, is the main attraction. The black central crosshair remains, as do the snailed minutes track and the new elongated trapezoidal applied indices, with the Arabic numeral at 12 o’clock and the date at 6 o’clock in a tone-on-tone window. Faceted rhodium-plated alpha hands indicate the time.

The watch is powered by BM13-1975 A (ValFleurier), the self-winding Baumatic calibre built with 21 jewels and a frequency of 28,800 vibrations/hour. It offers a 120-hour power reserve. Decoration visible through the caseback includes circular-grained bridges, a sandblasted and snailed plate, and an openworked oscillating weight decorated with Côtes de Genève.

The watch is worn on an integrated three-row stainless-steel bracelet combining polished and satin-finished surfaces. An interchangeable-bar system lets you remove the bracelet without tools. The bracelet is closed with the triple-folding clasp, fitted with security push-pieces.

Clifton Baumatic Perpetual Calendar 40mm

The second watch takes the Clifton into more complicated territory, offering the Baumatic Perpetual Calendar in a stainless-steel case. Measuring 40mm in diameter and 12.9mm thick, it is notably more compact than the 42mm precious-metal Clifton Perpetual Calendar models that preceded it. Like the 39mm model, the case combines polished and satin-finished surfaces with a domed sapphire crystal, four-screw exhibition caseback and 50m water resistance.

The same ice-blue guilloché-like treatment unites the two watches, although the perpetual calendar naturally has a busier display. Snailed sub-dials separate the indications, with the day, date, month and leap-year cycle distributed across the dial. Arabic numerals at 2, 4, 8 and 10 o’clock and elongated rhodium-plated trapezoidal indices preserve the visual link with the simpler Clifton. Faceted alpha hands indicate the time.

A few touches of colour break up the otherwise restrained palette. The leap-year disc uses a red pointer and “4” to mark the leap year; the date subdial has a red “31”, while the moon-phase display at 6 o’clock features a blue disc and polished rhodium moon. Despite the additional information, the guilloché remains clearly visible.

Inside is the Baumatic BM13-1975 AC2, combining Baume & Mercier’s automatic Baumatic base with a Dubois-Dépraz perpetual-calendar module. The movement operates at 28,800 vibrations/hour and delivers the same 120-hour power reserve as the time-and-date version. Through the sapphire caseback, the movement exhibits circular-grained bridges, a sandblasted and snailed plate and a gilded openworked rotor with Côtes de Genève and brand-specific engravings.

The perpetual calendar is worn on an interchangeable blue alligator strap with square scales and tone-on-tone stitching, closed by a polished and satin-finished stainless-steel pin buckle.
