In the extensive range of anniversary timepieces unveiled by Audemars Piguet to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the iconic Royal Oak in 2022, one watch stole some of the spotlight: the Jumbo Extra-Thin Openworked 16204ST. Its contemporary and geometric design, complemented by dynamic, powerful, flowing lines, skillfully captures the essence of a classic skeletonised movement. Upon its initial launch, two versions were introduced: a discreet and nearly monochromatic steel model and a striking rose gold variant. This year, the Le Brassus-based manufacture presents a yellow gold iteration, which is as captivating, original, and impressive as its predecessors. The Royal Oak Jumbo Extra-Thin Openworked 39mm 16204 series shares its style and size with the classic closed-dial Jumbo 16202, with 39mm x 8.1mm case dimensions. These openworked models also had a brand-new self-winding, extra-thin movement, calibre 7124. This calibre was developed concurrently with the new-generation, in-house-produced calibre 7121, which debuted in the Jumbo 16202. What sets the calibre 7124 apart is its striking and cohesive aesthetic, stemming from a ground-up design tailored for an openworked calibre, as we elaborated in detail when introducing the anniversary Openworked timepieces last year.

Naturally, what sets these models apart is the choice of materials. The 18k yellow gold version, with Audemars Piguet’s signature interplay of polished and brushed surfaces, radiates a brilliant allure. The white gold elements, including the eight hexagonal bezel screws, hour indices, and hands, add a touch of contrast, enhancing the overall impression of a very solid timepiece. The case, bezel, and bracelet are meticulously crafted from the precious yellow metal alloy. And for those of you who did not appreciate the special 50th-anniversary rotor, this Royal Oak Jumbo Extra-Thin Openworked 16204BA features a regular slim, openworked oscillating weight in yellow gold-plated 22k pink gold. The finishing is impressive, with countless internal angles and hand-applied chamfering.
