TAG Heuer’s racing-oriented Carrera Chronograph Sport returns with smaller proportions and new dial executions.
As Formula 1 arrives in Madrid this coming weekend for the inaugural Spanish Grand Prix, TAG Heuer, Title Partner of the race and Official Timekeeper of Formula 1, is using the occasion to bring its Carrera Chronograph Sport back into focus. The new series is an evolution of the 2020 Carrera Sport Chronograph, a contemporary, muscular interpretation of the racing chrono, with 44mm cases, shortened Carrera lugs, ceramic tachymeter bezels and the then-new Heuer 02 movement. Six years on, TAG Heuer has retained the essentials while substantially revising the proportions, ergonomics and dial design.
The Carrera’s racing credentials, of course, go back much further. Jack Heuer introduced the original Carrera in 1963, inspired by the demanding Carrera Panamericana road race and designed around a simple principle: elapsed time had to be readable at a glance while driving. The new Chronograph Sport remains faithful to that functional idea, although its execution is quite contemporary.
New, more compact cases
One significant change is the reduction in size. The new 42mm stainless-steel case replaces the 44mm case of the 2020 Carrera Chronograph Sport, and the lug-to-lug measurement has been reduced from 49.8mm to 48.6mm. Finally, the thickness also drops from 15.48mm to 14.17mm. These are important changes for a watch originally defined by its substantial presence, giving the new Carrera a more compact stance without losing its sporty character.
The case retains alternating polished and finely brushed surfaces, but the execution has been redesigned throughout. The familiar faceted Carrera lugs remain, while the sides are more sharply defined. The pump-style pushers continue the racing theme, their rounded forms recalling pistons or mechanical components associated with high-performance engines. This time around, the pushers feature coloured rings at the base and grooved rings on the top.
The fixed tachymeter bezel has also been reworked. It is thinner visually and now combines a steel outer structure with a ceramic insert, with the tachymeter scale engraved directly onto the ceramic. Depending on the model, the insert is black, blue or green. A domed sapphire crystal with double-sided anti-reflective treatment protects the dial. The screw-down sapphire caseback carries an engraved Victory Wreath, one of TAG Heuer’s recent Carrera signatures. Water resistance remains at 100m, which is comfortable for a chronograph with racing inspiration.
New, reworked dials
The dial is where the new series differs more evidently from the 2020 generation. The new Carrera Chronograph Sport replaces baton-style applied hour markers with Arabic numerals for double-digit minutes indication, giving the display a more pronounced instrument-sport-watch character. The basic layout remains: a tricompax arrangement with the 30-minute chronograph counter at 3 o’clock, 12-hour counter at 9, and running seconds at 6, this time with a much more neatly incorporated date aperture, colour-matched to the subdial.
The black opaline model is the most overtly racing of the group, with black azuré counters and red lacquered chronograph hands and white and red chronograph markings on the black flange. The blue version features a blue sunray-brushed dial with silver azuré counters, grey chronograph indications and a matching blue ceramic tachymeter bezel. The new green version combines a green sunray-brushed dial and matching ceramic bezel with silver counters and grey indications. Completing the range is a silver dial with black counters.
Across the collection, the hour and minutes hands are rhodium-plated, faceted and filled with white Super-LumiNova, and except for the black-dialled reference, all chronograph hands, including the central chronograph hand, are grey-lacquered.
Familiar mechanics
The series is powered by the in-house Calibre TH20-00, TAG Heuer’s automatic integrated chronograph movement, an evolution of the Heuer 02 used by the 2020 Carrera Sport collection. Operating at 28,800 vibrations/hour and equipped with a column wheel and a vertical clutch, the calibre delivers an 80-hour power reserve. The movement is visible through the sapphire caseback and features a TAG Heuer shield oscillating mass. The movement is finished with the Geneva stripes, frosting, circular graining and polished screw heads.
The new Carrera Sport is worn on the H-shaped steel bracelet, tapered for improved comfort and incorporating an easy-link adjustment system. A folding clasp with double safety push-buttons secures the watch on the wrist. The blue reference can be paired with a perforated brown calfskin strap, closed with a steel pin-buckle triple-folding clasp with double safety push-buttons.

The new TAG Heuer Carrera Chronograph Sport will be available from September 2026, with the blue leather-strap version following in October in most markets.
