The modern Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch Professional, the direct descendant of the watch that accompanied Apollo 11 crew members to the Moon, doesn’t need much introduction anymore. It is, undeniably, one of the most iconic and storied timepieces in existence. But there is more than one Moonwatch. Besides the classic steel version with a closed back and Hesalite crystal, Omega offers over 20 references of this emblematic chronograph, in steel with a white dial, in bi-material or in various gold alloys. Now in 2026, and following the brand’s tradition of releasing a new Speedmaster on one of the first Tuesdays of the year, Omega adds two new editions to its Moonwatch Professional collection, in steel or Moonshine Gold, equipped with black and white reverse panda-style dials.

A rare Reverse Panda dial for the Moonwatch

Although Omega names these new editions of the Speedmaster Moonwatch Black and White, we can also call them “reverse panda” models. In watch terms, a panda dial is a chronograph with a white dial and black sub-counters, while a reverse panda is its mirror image: a chronograph with a black dial and white sub-counters. As for the Speedmaster Moonwatch, there have been numerous editions with a panda dial, such as the 2004 Apollo XI 35th Anniversary (ref. 3569.31.00), the 2003 “Mitsukoshi” limited edition (300 pieces for Japan, ref. 3570.31) or one of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics Collection (ref. 522.30.42.30.04.001).

The 2017 Speedmaster Moonwatch “Speedy Tuesday” with its rare reverse panda dial

As for reverse panda dials on the Moonwatch Professional (there have been quite a few of these dials on other Speedmaster models), there’s only one that comes to mind, and it’s the first Speedy Tuesday edition launched by our friends of Fratello in 2017 (ref. 311.32.42.30.01.001). But there is more to come in the collection now, with two new editions of the Speedmaster Moonwatch, in steel or in Moonshine Gold, with black and white reverse panda dials. And if you have the feeling that you’ve already seen it somewhere, it’s because the watch (in its gold version) was discreetly teased by the brand at the 2025 Met Gala, worn by actor Colman Domingo.

Classic Moonwatch Professional Specs

Let’s get the obvious out of the way first. These two new Black and White editions are classic Speedmaster Moonwatch through and through. These are based on the so-called “sapphire sandwich” version, meaning that the top and bottom are protected by sapphire crystals. The base is the classic Moonwatch with its 42mm asymmetrical case; extended protection for the crown and pushers, lightly recessed into the casebands, lyre-shaped lugs, external tachymeter bezels and all the benefits of the update applied to the collection by Omega in 2021.

The case of these reverse panda Speedmaster Moonwatch models is available either in stainless steel or 18k Moonshine gold, Omega’s proprietary yellow gold alloy. The watches measure 13.18mm in thickness, with a fairly compact lug-to-lug of 47.5mm. The double-step caseback is screwed and equipped with a sapphire crystal to admire the calibre 3861 inside, and water-resistance is still rated at 50m. On top, we also find a sapphire crystal, in the model’s classic box-like shape (tall and with a relatively moderate curve), not the lovely Hesalite-like sapphire crystal found on the 2024 First Omega in Space.

Around the sapphire crystal is a classic Speedmaster feature, the external tachymeter scale. The bezel’s frame, in steel or Moonshine gold, is home to a black polished ceramic insert, rather than the usual aluminium insert found on the classic black Moonwatch or its more recent white evolution. The tachymeter scale is rendered in fade-resistant white enamel but retains the historical layout with the “dot over ninety” and “dot diagonal to 70”. The bezel’s insert is identical on the steel and gold versions.

As for the bracelet, like all sapphire sandwich versions of the Speedmaster Moonwatch, these new reverse panda models opt for a brushed and polished version of the retro-style “Nixon” bracelet, measuring 20mm at the lugs and 15mm at the clasp. This flexible and handsome bracelet is closed with a striped folding clasp equipped with a polished Omega logo, security pushers and comfort extension integrated within the clasp.

The new black and white dial

What matters most today are the dials. Following the 2021 update of the Speedmaster Moonwatch, these new 2026 reverse panda editions retain the classic step layout but with a more refined character. The base of the dial is polished black, with a varnished and lacquered finish that creates a glossy effect. The sub-counters are also varnished and lacquered, but with a white finish. What makes these dials different from a classic black dial Moonwatch is the hands and markers.

Here, Omega has opted for hour markers and a logo applied on the dial, and paired with polished metal hands. On the steel version, these elements are rhodium-plated, and both the hands and hour markers feature white Super-LumiNova inserts. On the Moonshine gold edition, the hour markers, hands and sub-dial hands are made in solid gold, while the central seconds hand is rendered in PVD Moonshine Gold. White SLN is also found on all elements. Whether in steel or in gold, the minute track is transferred in white on the main dial, while the sub-dials feature minute tracks transferred in black. The result is a crisp, legible dial (as you’d expect from a Speedy), yet with a slightly more refined look.

Calibre 3861 Inside

When it comes to the mechanics, no surprises here. These new Speedmaster Moonwatch Black and White rely on the in-house calibre 3861, an evolution of the classic hand-wound calibres 1861 and 861, which have powered the Moonwatch for over 50 years. This movement, which retains a cam-lever chronograph architecture, has been modernised with the addition of the brand’s co-axial escapement and a silicon hairspring, enabling it to be Master Chronometer-certified and resistant to powerful magnetic fields (up to 15,000 gauss). Beating at a 3Hz frequency, the movement stores about 50 hours of power reserve when fully wound.

  1. The steel model costs 13.8% more than the white dial Moonwatch (in Canada). This new model offers a ceramic bezel with new dial, hands, and hour markers. Not sure if the crystal is the same as the regular Moonwatch or more like the FIOS. Substantial price difference but if I love how it looks. I would either get this or the regular black dial version.
