Ressence unveils its Type 1 Slim adorned with Islamic geometric patterns and glistening golden sands to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the UAE.

Belgian brand Ressence has engineered a new and highly dynamic visual language for telling the time. Renowned for its distinctive ‘beyond hands’ displays, Ressence watches tell the time with revolving sub-dials powered by the brand’s patented Orbital Convex System (ROCS). Using highly graphic revolving sub-dials, time literally circles around the dial like planets orbiting the Sun. Nothing is static; everything is in constant motion, like time itself. Marking the second collaboration piece with Ahmed Seddiqi & Sons, the Type 1 Slim DX2 celebrates the 50th anniversary of the United Arab Emirates. Limited to 25 pieces, this special piece stands out with its chameleonic sand-coloured dial engraved with Islamic geometric patterns.

Two years ago, Ressence presented its first collaboration watch with Ahmed Seddiqi & Sons, the leading retailer of luxury watches in the UAE, during Dubai Watch Week. The open-worked dial of the 2019 Ressence Type 1 Squared DXB featured intricate geometric patterns associated with Islamic art, motifs that frequently appear in architecture, woodwork, ceramics and even carpets in the Arabic world.

The latest collaboration piece also pays tribute to Islamic geometry with its stunning dial adorned with a series of triangles and irregular quadrilaterals arranged like wood marquetry. The polygons on the glittering sand-coloured PVD dial are engraved with diamond burs and placed at different angles to produce a fascinating interplay of light reflections and different tonalities.

Like other Type 1 Slim models, the dial is in permanent motion. Powered by Ressence’s patented display module (ROCS), the sub-dials or satellites and the main disc that hosts the sub-dials are in constant revolution. The three eccentric biaxial satellites displaying the hours, seconds and days of the week in the central part of the dial are framed with a shinier, golden texture, while the minutes on the periphery are engraved into a glistening sand-coloured track. All the indices and the hands are white and filled with Super-LumiNova.

Based on the Type 1 Slim model introduced in 2019, the attractive 42mm pebble-shaped case with integrated lugs is milled from one block of grade 5 titanium and polished throughout. The weight of the watch is just 67 grams. Slimmer than the original Type 1 with its 13mm thickness, the streamlined Type 1 Slim has a case height of 11mm thanks to the winding/setting system on the caseback. With no crown to interrupt the smooth rounded contours of the case, the retractable lever on the caseback is used to wind the movement and adjust the settings. The streamlined profile of the case flows to the double-domed sapphire crystal protecting the dial.

The patented ROCS 1 module is driven by the minute axle of a customised automatic ETA 2892/A base calibre. Composed of 107 parts, the gears in the ROCS calculate the seconds, hours and day, taking only the minute as a reference from the movement. Beating at 28,800vph, the hours, minutes, seconds and days of the week will keep rotating for 36 hours.

The Ressence Type 1 Slim DX2 comes with a tan grained calf strap and an olive green rubber strap with a polished grade 5 titanium buckle. Limited to 25 numbered pieces, the watch will retail for CHF 22,500 (excl. tax).
