Today we’re introducing three new A. Lange & Söhne Saxonia models that will be officially launched during the upcoming SIHH in January 2015. Technically all three watches will remain the same, however in terms of aesthetics and/or size the Saxonia, the Saxonia Automatic and the Saxonia Dual Time will be updated. Small, but interesting and quite notable changes.

The Saxonia line represents the “entry” level of the high-end watch manufacture from Saxony, Germany. Two of the models, the Saxonia and the Saxonia Dual Time, will be reduced in size. Yes, you read that correct! Every time that a watch brand decides to reduce size instead of increasing, we here at Monochrome applaud that kind of bravery. That’s just one of the reasons why we’re so taken by the 38.5 mm measuring Lange 1 that has remained unchanged in size for the last 20 years, and has not been subject to the big, bigger, biggest hype that went on in the watch industry in that past decade.

To be more precise, the Saxonia – that’s the small hand wound model – was 34mm at introduction and was enlarged in 2007 to the current 37mm in diameter. The new Saxonia, with manually wound movement calibre L941.1, will be reduced to a very nice 35mm in diameter. The 40mm Saxonia Dual Time will be reduced to the same size as the Saxonia Automatic, namely a fair 38.5mm in diameter. Besides the size changes, all three models will get a slightly updated dial design. Here’s a large photo of the Saxonia Automatic dial, that shows all updated design cues.

What changed: the minute track around the dial, the second track in the subsidiary second sub dial and added Arabic numerals for the tens, the solid-gold applied hour markers have been moved toward the periphery of the dial and are executed as double baton appliques at 3, 6, 9, and 12 o’clock. In the following side-by-side you can see the differences.

The new smaller Saxonia will make a great classically styled dress watch for men and women. We would not be surprised if the 37mm Saxonia models on the second hand market, will become even more sought after. All together a great choice from Lange, to reduce the Saxonia in size, and keep the Saxonia Automatic at the very nice size of 38.5mm, and reduce the Saxonia Dual Time to the same nice size.
