In 2008 Glashütte-Original introduced a rather exhibitionist watch called the PanoInverse XL (see here for the superb photos of the PanoInverse XL that featured in our Weekly Watch Photo). Featuring a reversed movement that shows the beautifully finished main plate, jewels, polished screws and duplex swan-neck fine adjustment visible from the dial side. For those with a preference for technical watch-stuff happening in plain sight, that’s a piece for you. While the PanoInverse XL was a manually wound timepiece, the new PanoMaticInverse is its automatically wound sibling.

The name already says it, Pano-MATIC-Inverse. The “Matic” part refers to the newly developed automatically wound movement, caliber 91-02. Like its manually wound sibling, the PanoMaticInverse comes in a 42 mm stainless steel or 18K red gold case, with a sapphire crystal on each side. The ‘dial’ features a finish that is called Glashütte ribbing (the German variant of Côte de Genève). Besides the jewels and heat-blued screws, there’s an off center hour/minute sub dial, a small second sub dial, and GO’s iconic Panorama Date.

The three-quarter main plate is made in German silver with a rhodium ‘coating’. The one quarter that is not covered by the main plate, give stage to the duplex swan-neck fine adjustment, and the beautifully hand-engraved balance bridge. Besides the screws, which are heat-blued, the hour, minute and second hand are also heat-blued. The hour and minute hands feature super-luminova highlights, to improve legibility when it’s dark.

Turning the watch around, the reverse side shows the skeletonized central rotor, fitted with a 21K gold oscillating mass. The full plate is also finished with the characteristic Glashütte ribbing, a number of rubies, and the engraved brand name and other text. Caliber 91-02 offers 42 hours of power reserve when fully wound.

The case is satin brushed and polished red gold or stainless steel. The red gold version features gold applied hour markers, and the stainless steel version features heat-blued steel hour markers. The PanoMaticInverse comes on a Lousianna alligator leather strap that is closed with a folding clasp in matching metal.
