For the past four years, Maurice Lacroix has been busy promoting its versatile Aikon collection, the brand’s accessibly priced, game-changing luxury sports watch. With so many Aikons on the scene, it’s easy to overlook the brand’s more elegant Pontos line. Two years ago, we covered the refreshed Pontos Day Date with its classical, conservative office-ready looks. Returning for its third time to Geneva Watch Days, Maurice Lacroix presents a surprising new version of its Pontos Day Date with a more contemporary vibe dressed in khaki fatigues, housed in a sleek matte black DLC case and accompanied by a nylon NATO-style strap.

As Stéphane Waser, MD of Maurice Lacroix, told us in an interview earlier this year, the brand is also keen on targeting a younger age group. “We changed the whole brand positioning and the whole company culture,” he told MONOCHROME, “we have become younger talking to millennials…the so-called GenZ.

Compared to the Pontos Day Date models of 2020, the latest iteration is more trend-conscious. Respecting the case dimensions of earlier models, the new Pontos Day Date has a 41mm diameter and a height of 11mm. However, the matte black DLC stainless steel case visually diminishes the dimensions making the watch, as the brand suggests, suitable for men and women alike. It might look like a conventional round case, but there are a few design details that make it more interesting. For example, the stepped lugs and the streamlined tapered guards flanking the fluted crown to ensure the 100m water-resistance.

The layout of the day and date functions on the dial has always been the distinguishing feature of this Pontos model. The new dial respects the format but uses different textures, finishings and levels. Placed in an arcing aperture at noon, just below the sandblasted and recessed minute ring, is the day of the week indication counterbalanced by the date window at 6 o’clock. Both apertures are bevelled, and their matte black background matches the applied faceted indices and the matte bezel. Surprisingly detailed given its price, the two indications appear in recessed areas with a contemporary sandblasted finishing. The khaki colour used on the dial is sunray brushed, giving the dial a cool, silky texture. Time is read with black-plated hands treated with white Super-LumiNova, and the central seconds hand, which floats above the recessed minutes track, has a bright red tip.

Powered by calibre ML143, the automatic Sellita movement can be seen through the exhibition caseback. Beating at a frequency of 28,800vph (4Hz), the watch delivers a standard 38-hour power reserve. Functions include central hours, minutes, seconds, day of the week at noon and date at 6 o’clock. The movement is rhodium plated with circular graining and Côtes de Genève.

Completing the military mood of the watch is the dark green nylon NATO-style strap with tone-on-tone stitching, an easy strap exchange system and a black DLC-coated steel butterfly clasp.
