Introducing the Dwiss M3 Watch, The Result of a “Watch Design Club”

The new watch of a brand based on a rather democratic process.

A strong community can get you a long way. Helping each other out to overcome challenges can be greatly rewarding for all parties involved. And it turns out this also applies to the field of watchmaking. Dwiss, a relatively young and creative brand coming from Switzerland, has enlisted the help of “the Club” to design its latest watch. The Dwiss M3 is designed with input from trusted members through an interesting and rather democratic process.

Following the M1, released in 2011 and the M2 which came five years later, the M3 is the newest collection by Dwiss. Its basic design spawns from the M1 and M2 but was redefined with the help of the roughly 100 Dwiss Club members. These members have been given the opportunity to vote on certain aspects of the new watch like case design, size, dial and time indication, straps etc. In each phase of the project, members could give their input, which would be taken into account by Dwiss in taking the next step.

It is an interesting way to create a new watch and simultaneously for people to get involved almost hands-on with the build of a new collection. Your likely to be more committed to buying it if you’ve had the chance to help the collection take shape. And in return Dwiss would grant members a rare insight into the development stages of a watch. After 12 monthly fees, each member would also receive their very own Dwiss M3.

The result of this community-based approach is a surprising watch with an unusual display. The Dwiss M3 features a so-called “displaced time display.” The dial comes in either black, white or blue. It is made up of several layers and has a strong sense of depth. Traditionally the largest hand on a watch indicates the minutes. A centrally mounted hand extends to the outer edges of the dial to do so. In the Dwiss M3 the outer ring displays the hours, indicated with a trapezoid-shaped pointer.

The inside ring, suspended over the dial, displays the minutes. An openworked wheel with one solid “arm” travels along the minute track. Finally, stacked on top of the minute wheel is a running seconds indicator with a contrasting arm. The idea is that the slowest indication is on the outer edge, with the fastest in the middle. Underneath all that is a date indication, where a red marker travels under the dial and is visible through small cut-outs.

The stainless steel case for the Dwiss M3 measures 42mm in diameter. It has a modern and edgy design reminiscent of the M1 and M2. A rubber-clad crown is nestled between two crown guards. Following the current trend of luxury steel sports watches the M3 has an integrated steel bracelet easily changed to rubber with a quick-release system. Both sides have a sapphire crystal, with the top one having an anti-reflective coating.

The Dwiss M3 is powered by an automatic ETA 2824-2 movement. As said this indicates hours, minutes, seconds and the date. Visible through the caseback you can see that it is a decorated version of the workhorse calibre. A decorated rotor winds it to a maximum of 42 hours of power reserve. It runs at a frequency of 4Hz (28,800vph).

The Dwiss M3 is a limited edition of 500 pieces available to non-Club-members and can be ordered now. The price for the M3 is USD 1,390 with a rubber strap or USD 1,590 with the integrated steel bracelet. There’s no mention of it but the rubber strap will undoubtedly be sold separately. The watch is sold directly through Dwiss.com.
