Get Ready For Action With The Tissot PRX Powermatic 80 Grendizer/Goldorak (Incl. Video)
Tissot merges two 1970s icons, as it launches a rather special edition of its highly successful PRX Powermatic 80 called the UFO Robot Grendizer.
This is not the first time 1970s pop culture has come to life on a watch dial, and it’s likely not to be the last time. There’s just something appealing about past icons, and reviving them in relation to watches is common practice. One such watch to get this type of makeover is the Tissot PRX Powermatic 80. Born in the 1970s as the PRX, it was relaunched to great success just a few short years ago. This was at the peak of the luxury sports watch hype, and in came the Tissot PRX Powermatic 80 collection, an affordable and overall very well-finished alternative.
Now though, Tissot’s star of the 1970s collides with another icon from that era; UFO Robot Grendizer! UFO Robot Grendizer is a Japanese Manga comic book series and animated TV show created by Go Nagai. It revolves around Crown Prince Duke Fleed who flees his home planet after the people from planet Vega invade it. He does so in the Grendizer, a giant mecha robot, and ends up on Earth. The show first aired on Japanese television in 1975 and ran for 74 episodes. In Europe, it was mainly a hit in France and Italy, where it’s known as Goldorak. After almost 50 years, the Grendizer robot now finds its way to the dial of the Tissot PRX collection.
Housed in the well-known 40mm wide stainless steel case, the bust of the Grendizer mecha warrior robot is illustrated on the deep blue dial with a Super-LumiNova outline. Under daylight, it’s quite discreet as the blue outline closely matches the tone of the dial. In low-light situations, however, a glowing yellow outline appears, showing the iconic Japanese figurine. The markers surrounding the Grendizer image, as well as the hands, have green Super-LumiNova inserts for contrast. The finishing touches on the front include an inscription in the sloped flange that surrounds the dial.
Turning the watch over also reveals the special rotor for this unique take on the PRX. This still drives the Powermatic 80 movement to an 80-hour running time but is now decorated with a second Grendizer image, and the inscription “Tissot x Grendizer”.
For the rest, it’s very much familiar territory. As mentioned, the case measures 40mm in width, and 10.9mm in height. The lug-to-lug dimension is 51mm due to the non-articulating first link of the integrated bracelet. This can easily be swapped out for any of the rubber or leather straps Tissot offers, thanks to the built-in quick-release push pin system. At 100m of water resistance, the PRX is also an excellent poolside companion!
The Tissot PRX Powermatic 80 40mm Grendizer Special Edition is not limited by number and will retail for CHF 795 or EUR 895, including VAT. It’s also presented in a special box covered with images of the Grendizer TV show.
