The Hamilton Khaki Field Titanium Automatic, Now In 38mm

Hamilton's military-inspired and robust watch, now in a more compact, versatile size.

Part of the Swatch Group for some years now, Hamilton is one of the most respected brands when it comes to producing military watches – using its past as a supplier of multiple military forces during the 20th century. This heritage is easily visible in the Khaki Field collection, comprising great and accessible mechanical watches that are built around the all-purpose timepieces used during past conflicts, such as the Khaki Field Mechanical 38mm. In 2020, the brand launched a versatile, robust 42mm titanium version. And now, it’s time for this light and solid piece to come in a smaller case, with the new Hamilton Khaki Field Titanium Automatic 38mm collection.

The Khaki Field collection oozes action and resistance, with simple yet efficient designs, and for a few years a choice of materials that make them resistant to most conditions. And of course, there’s a no-nonsense coolness to these watches, with a deliberate mid-century aesthetic, reminiscent of the compact and resilient “Hacked” watches delivered to ally forces. Tough and dependable, this military, all-purpose style still provides an attractive style for today’s casual needs.

Previously launched in two 42mm versions, which we’ve explored here, it is now time for the lightweight Khaki Field Titanium to come closer in size to the vintage models that inspired them, now with a versatile 38mm case. Made of grade 2 titanium, with an entirely brushed surface (or matte black-coated on one of the models), the case is simple and classic of the collection. It’s well equipped, however, with a sapphire crystal on top, a see-through caseback that is screwed to the case and a 100m water-resistance. The thickness is well controlled at 11.6mm and the 38mm diameter is simply great on most men or women.

The layout of the dial, at least on the two classic models, is fairly familiar. Matte on most areas, it provides depth and contrast with a recessed chapter ring decorated with a concentric pattern. Large luminescent Arabic numerals are painted on the dial, and in line with traditional military specifications, a 24-hour scale is also shown. The hands are black-coated and filled with large inserts of lume. And yes, these watches have a no-date display. As for the third model, with a black PVD coated titanium case, the dial is fairly different, as it has a concrete-like texture, but still the same layout.

The new Hamilton Khaki Field Titanium Automatic 38mm is available in 3 versions; brushed case with black dial and khaki nubuck strap; brushed case with khaki dial and brown nubuck strap; or black PVD-coated case with grey concrete-like dial and grey nubuck strap. All have 20mm straps closed by the brand’s classic H-shaped pin buckle.

Powering these new Khaki Field Titanium Automatic 38mm is the automatic calibre H-10, also known in other brands of the group as the Powermatic 80. This self-winding movement is based on the tried-and-tested 2824 ébauche, yet upgraded with an extended 80h power reserve and a Nivachron antimagnetic balance spring.
